Title: Disney Censors 'The French Connection', removes scene featuring a racial slur
Post by: claws on June 07, 2023, 01:23:34 AM
QuoteDisney has apparently censored The French Connection by removing a line of offensive dialogue without notice, warning, or statement. This censorship carries over to The Criterion Channel and theatrical screenings.

This is why I stick to physical media

I'm perfectly OK with them removing profanity or racial slurs for their own broadcast purposes, but not without a notice that it has been edited for content. Also, the original must be preserved in some format. Surprised the sticklers at Criterion would go along with this.

Disney should bring back SONG OF THE SOUTH, too. Slap warnings all over it if you must, but for God's sake, let us see it. We're adults, and it has historical and artistic value.

Yes, Disney should bring back Song of the South, which I was lucky enough to see  when I was little.

Yes, physical media is increasingly the wiser option, as are printed books.

I fear we are going to see this sort of thing become the norm, and it disgusts me. I grew up with Christian fundamentalists destroying library books and screaming about sexual content, I've lived much of my adult life with leftists chasing the boogieman of allegedly racist content and trying to ruin lives over the use of words they don't like, and I wish people would just try letting free speech be.

Kristi had been after a copy of Song of the South. I managed to get one, but I had to get it sent from Australia. I have no idea if it was ever officially released over there or if my copy is a bit dodgy. It certainly looks legitimate.
