The DVD rental service, that is (rebranded as DVD.com). Today is the last day of operation. Subscribers get some nice going away perks. We get to keep the final disc we rent: in my case, MARKETA LAZAROVA.
They are also giving away up to 10 discs to subscribers, chosen from items in your rental queue. Makes sense, it costs them money to dispose of the excess inventory anyway, might as well get some goodwill for the parent company on the way out. They don't explain exactly how they will choose who gets the discs and how they will be chosen, but my guess is they look at who wants a disc and in what priority. I am assuming most people will be looking for copies of AVENGERS ENDGAME and the fact that I have mostly discs no one else wants means I am almost expecting to get 10 rare DVDs. The next 10 in my queue are
1 Live Freaky Die Freaky, 2003
2 Talking Head, 1992
3 House, 1986
4 The Living and the Dead, 2007
5 In the Realm of the Senses, 1976
6 Shinbone Alley, 1971
7 Citizen Dog, 2004
8 Marebito, 2004
9 Grimm Love, 2006
10 Post Tenebras Lux, 2012
I am legit expecting to get at least 7 of those because I am betting no one else, or almost no one else, has them on their list. I have a bunch more in queue too; I halfway expect to get the full 10 discs.
Anyone else in this situation or did everyone already ditch the DVD rentals long ago?
I had no idea this was a thing.
I was really disappointed when I got the streaming service that you couldn't watch any movie you wanted. DVD netflix was the best. I got to see so much crazy stuff.
I buy my Blu-rays anyway. :tongueout:
Apparently I got no free bonus discs. Other people are reporting they already got notifications about their freebies (nobody got more than 3 so far). Maybe more will trickle out over the next few days.
Oooooh.... that's not promising. I was hoping to get at least a few out of 10. I had none on your list queued (though I'd rec'd several of those from NF/DVD.com over the years). Ah well.

I'm with you on that one. There were some great and really weird and obscure choices with the DVD options. The regular streaming was just too mainstream. (That might almost be a pun, but I doubt it.)
our service was for 2 dvds at a time, we kept dr.strangelove and picnic at hanging rock, so the old guy is happy. where are you seeing that people already got any of the "up to ten" , rev? i'll be surprised if we don't get a few, we've been with them since day one.

I still hope they'll ship more out. They have at least a skeleton staff there for another few weeks, gotta give them something to do.
The part about this that bugs me the most is that with Target and Best Buy pretty much killing their DVD selections, I'd been thinking about resubscribing to the rental service. I used to have it years ago, but canceled when I got into some debt.
There's almost no place to get good DVD anymore.
