Title: SEQUELS THAT ARE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL
Post by: RCMerchant on August 12, 2024, 07:01:04 AM
What sequels do you think are better than the original? Hmmm...lemme think...

. the TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE (1932) over DR. MABUSE, the GAMBLER (1922)
. the DEVIL'S REJECTS (2005) over HOUSE OF A THOUSAND CORPSES (2003)
. the ROAD WARRIOR (1981) over MAD MAX (1979)
. STAR TREK II- THE WRAITH OF KHAN (1982) over STAR TREK-THE MOTION PICTURE (1979)

Mebbe the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) over FRANKENSTEIN (1931)? I dunno, that's a tough call for me...
Same goes for the EVIL DEAD 2 (1987). It's hard to choose. Both are good, but I think I prefer the originals on both.

I dunno- I can't think of any more of the top of my head- what about you?

I agree about Star Trek 2 being better than the previous one.

The Gods Must Be Crazy 2 was slightly better than the original.

The "Mission Impossible" sequels started getting really good starting with the 4th installment.

the only sequel I can think of that it seems the majority of people people agree is better than the original is GODFATHER PART 2...

a few 'part 2's that I personally think surpass the originals:

CRITTERS 2 > CRITTERS
GREMLINS 2 > GREMLINS
GHOULIES 2 > GHOULIES
FRIDAY 13TH PART 2 > FRIDAY 13TH
FINAL DESTINATION 2 > FINAL DESTINATION
HALLOWEEN 2 > HALLOWEEN *
PUMPKINHEAD 2 > PUMPKINHEAD
TERMINATOR 2 > TERMINATOR
HILLS HAVE EYES 2 ('85) > HILLS HAVE EYES ('77) *
CHILDREN OF THE CORN 2 > CHILDREN OF THE CORN
I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER > I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

* I can't argue my case for these two, just my opinion.

2 Fast Too Furious is better than the original as it is sometimes very funny.

Agree with Rev about the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE sequels: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT was great. 😊🐢

This is a no brainer: EXORCIST 3 is miles and kilometers better than EXORCIST 2 THE HERETIC.

Come to think about it, even putting my nads in a blender is better than watching EXORCIST 2 THE HERETIC 😳😉🐢

neither of those is the original though...

I liked parts of EXCORCIST 3 but found it a bit gruelling to get through as it went on.

one day I will actually make it all the way through EXCORCIST , so I'll be able to say for sure that I prefer part 2... at the moment it's an (un)educated guess.

the furthest along the sequels chronology I can go, finding ones I prefer to the original entry, is FRIDAY 13TH PART 8, and then THE HOWLING PART 7.

this is tough, because the original HOWLING is great, but Part 7 is so ludicrously inept in the best possible way, that I prefer it

I love the EXORCIST (1973). I liked the EXORCIST III alot. It had it's moments.
Now the HERETIC...Holy s**t. Not a fan at all. John Boorman made this?

THE EXORCIST is clearly a better movie. But ask me which one I want to watch again? I'm taking EXORCIST II: HERETIC. Laughable, insane, WTF, just more fun all around. Boorman's bad movies are never boring, and thus better than most directors good movies.

Aliens is better than Alien, though IMHO, the first three films are all great

Dawn of the Dead (1978) is better than Night of the Living Dead (1968) but again, all three of the original Romero zombie movies are great

Gremlins 2 was better than Gremlins

Embrace The Darkness II was better than Embrace The Darkness I

Mission Impossible II was way better than the first movie, and remains one of my favourite movies to this day. John Woo for the win!

Conan the Destroyer is much better than Conan The Barbarian.

Aliens is more viscerally thrilling than Alien.

Terminator 2 is even better than the original Terminator.

SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM (1973) was better than BLACULA (1972). And it had Pam Grier too!
THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT (1977) was more fun than the LAND THAT TIME FORGOT (1974).

If you do Halloween viewings, it would be perfect for this October. Pick a specific night, relax, and enjoy the movie in the best quality available to you.

It's not rocket science. It is only a movie

EVIL DEAD II surpass the original, in my opinion. Bruce Campbell's character is finally fleshed out and he can go all out with the slapstick and awesome one liners.

Unpopular and confusing opinion, because it's a prequel: I prefer RED DRAGON over SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Edward Norton is a way better protagonist than Jodie Foster, and the villain this time is much more elaborated. You get to know him better and can even sympathize with him at the end, a little bit at least.

I'd agree that Aliens is better than Alien.

I also prefer Die Hard 2 to the O.G., though that may be simply be due to my seeing the original so much that I burned out on it.

I recently re-watched Tim Burton's first two Batman movies and found that I enjoyed Batman Returns more than the first. They really let Tim go nuts on that one, it's way darker and weirder than the original.

I've heard a few people say that they feel that Aliens is the better movies, but I very much disagree. You take all the world building that someone else has done, then you remove the suspense and tension and replace it with big explosions. Hell, Michael Bay could have directed Aliens and it would have been no different (James Cameron himself said Aliens was made the way it was because he didn't feel he could make a film better than Alien so had to make something different). I am neutral on Die Hard, but I do completely agree with you on Batman Returns. It is a shame they replaced him for the next couple of movies and killed the series.

I agree w/ bread mold >>> PROM NIGHT.

For many years I agreed that ALIENS was superior to ALIEN. I've seen the light. ALIENS is superb in many ways but visually it hasn't aged super-well for HD screens. That's not the film's fault but it is hard for me to have the same experience I used to have with it. ALIEN, on the other hand, looks as good as ever and is flawless in every regard. Excellent acting, the best directing Ridley Scott ever did or will ever do.

I avoid these threads because they're rabbit holes to senseless debates that I don't need to get myself into. However, here's two that haven't been mentioned that I don't expect anyone will feel too strongly about:

AUSTIN POWERS: IMOM <<< AUSTIN POWERS: TSWSM
ANCHORMAN <<< ANCHORMAN 2

Hmm it's not a top tier 80s slasher but I do like PROM NIGHT, however I didn't enjoy any of the sequels.

slightly OT: I said in the other thread there's hardly any franchises where I think the original is the best. I've had a think about that now, and I'm definitely wrong. I did mention JAWS and PSYCHO, but there's also DIE HARD, SPECIES, BACK TO THE FUTURE, JURASSIC PARK, SLEEPAWAY CAMP, quite a few others...

THE ENFORCER, which ramps up the comedy a bit (oops Harry has interrupted a porn shoot, fnarr!) and DEAD POOL, officially, although I don't think that one really feels like Harry sequel. more like a standalone movie. it does have the weirdest car chase ever though.

I will call that a sequel that's every bit as good as the original.
