Title: Most recent film that you consider an 'all time classic' ?
Post by: zombie no.one on August 25, 2024, 03:05:51 AM
what's the most recently released film that you would put up there with your all time favourites in the history of cinema?

just in your personal opinion... I'm not bothered about the budget, how many people have seen it, or how many awards it may have won.

For reference, Google branded these as Modern Classics

1. The Dark Knight 2008
2. Inception 2010
3. Interstellar 2014
4. Django Unchained 2012
5. Gladiator 2000
6. The Wolf of Wall Street 2013
7. Inglourious Basterds 2009
8. WALL·E 2008
9. Mad Max: Fury Road 2015
10. No Country for Old Men 2007
11. Whiplash 2014
12. The Social Network 2010
13. Get Out 2017
14. La La Land 2016
15. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) 2014
16. There Will Be Blood 2007
17. Zodiac 2007
18. Boyhood 2014
19. Lady Bird 2017
20. Moonlight 2016

Mad Max Fury Road would be my personal favorite modern classic.

I guess one can pick more obscure or unpopular opinion movies.

seen these ones. disagree that any are classic, although I can at least see why some might think each one is...

for me, WOLF OF WALL STREET was trying way too hard to be GOODFELLAS... and granted you could also level that accusation at CASINO, but whereas CASINO totally works for me, WOLF did not.

as far as Coen Bros go, FARGO is an all time classic imo.... NO COUNTRY is, I guess, great for what it is, but helllla bleak  :buggedout: . too bleak for me. :shrugs:

I'm pretty sure FURY ROAD is the best new film I've seen in the past 10 years.

I liked OUATI HOLLYWOOD a great deal, but it's not in the same class as FURY ROAD...

Also, both NO COUNTRY and A SERIOUS MAN >>>>>>>>>>>>> FARGO in my book.

Finally, I'm w/ ZNO on WOLF OF WALL STREET. A clunker for me. I thought IRISHMAN was significantly superior to WOLF.

Darfur was filmed in South Africa in 2009 and it's in full on YouTube. You won't believe who directed it.

So I guess I'm the first person you've met who neither loved nor hated it (liked it, didn't love it.)

ah, Uwe Bol (yes I looked)... funnily enough his other film from 2009, RAMPAGE was one of the few films I've seen in that time period that I liked even tho it's so brutal :buggedout:

cool, will have to check out IRISHMAN...

SIMPLE MAN... have given it a couple of goes, once when it came out, once about a year ago. it just didn't do it for me even though it's clearly got all the hallmarks of a Coen bros movie. my loss!

well I'm racking my brains to think of a more recent film than HOT FUZZ (2007) that I would consider a (near-)masterpiece, something that just bedazzled me with its greatness.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D (2009) is my go-to slasher of the 21st century so far but I'm not going to call it an all time classic, that would be ridiculous

And I'm the exact opposite: I loved WOLF but was bored by IRISHMAN. Also I kind of hated the "de-aging" thing. Just use real new young actors, don't use technology to make old actors look young. I forgive him because he's Scorsese, but IRISHMAN had a "let's get the old band together for a reunion tour" feel to me.

I have a gap in my movie watching for movies that came out while I was in law school (about 2004-2007) and was too busy to see any new movie.

fair enough

yeah I heard about the de-aging stuff in IRISHMAN and that kind of gimmickry doesn't exactly instill me with confidence, but I will see...

I think the Rev would appreciate both NO COUNTRY and ZODIAC. I think ZODIAC is excellent but maybe not even in my Top 10 for this century so far.

Stephen Spielberg's LINCOLN.

It never gets old for me.

No country for old men did absolutely nothing for me. But that was perhaps because it was so hyped up at the time that it was bound to be a disappointment.

As for a modern classic, I'd nominate Poor Things.

this phenomemon really affects me sometimes. - usually with tv series more than with films. if everyone and their dog is raving about a particular tv series I tend to consciously avoid it for as long as possible. I have only this year decided it's time to check out THE SOPRANOS... in 2030 I may check out GAME OF THRONES :bouncegiggle:

I must have watched MONSTER (2003) at least 3 times. I also love  NEBRASKA (2013).
(and both with Bruce Dern!)

This may be a wise move for you (and others). I appear to currently be in the minority that remains adamant that GAME OF THRONES is one of the very best series in TV history and ended exactly the way it was always intended to end, by design.

W/ that said, it doesn't definitively end - as it doesn't conclude many of the character arcs - as (hopefully not really a spoiler) a solid dozen major characters remain alive at the end of the final episode, and one of them specifically echoes one of Laura Palmer's lines of dialogue from the final episode of TWIN PEAKS Season 2, predicting future possibilities.

This leaves me hopeful that GAME OF THRONES will return in some form waaaaaay down the road, maybe even in another 15-20 years, and will be resolved in a way that redeems the show's legacy in the same way TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN did 25 years on.......

So, no hurry, dude!

I was another one who simply wasn't that angry at the ending - I mean, it's not like it wasn't foreshadowed throughout the last 3 seasons!

Or... the entire 8 seasons!  :bouncegiggle:

The character everyone got all mad about was never intended to be the Protagonist. George RR Martin's earliest notes for the novels consistently specify that the books are about 3 characters, and that fan favorite isn't one of them. But people see what they want to see!
