Title: The Official BadMovies.org poll of the Greatest Horror Movies of all Time
Post by: Rev. Powell on October 03, 2024, 07:03:26 PM
It's October, so why not?

Rules are simple. Just list your top 25 horror movies, ranked. TV movies are eligible, series and miniseries are not. Your number one choice gets 25 points, #2 gets 24, and #25 earns 1 point. (If you want to keep your ballot secret, you can message me). You can edit your votes up until October 30. (I might change mine before then.) I'll compile them all in a spreadsheet and give the final results of which films scored the most points on Halloween. I'll go first, to show you how it's done:

25 points to  The Shining (1980)
24 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
23 The Wicker Man (1973)
22 Audition (1999)
21 The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
20 Videodrome (1983)
19 Eyes Without a Face (1960)
18 Suspiria (1977)
17 Evil Dead II (1987)
16 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)
15 Viy (1967)
14 The Witch (2015)
13 Haxan (1922)
12 Carnival of Souls (1962)

Started with films that had a big effect on me when I first watched them, then sort of drifted into favourites to watch multiple times (so ones at the top might have frightened me as a kid or shocked me with the ending (Saw and The Mist, looking at you here, while lower down ones are just ones I like watching semi-regularly). I may move the order around a bit more, but not huge changes. I've went for pure horror movies and deliberately not included any horror comedies.

25 The Thing 1982.
24 Alien 1979.
23 Halloween 1978.
22 Jaws 1975.
21 The Mist 2007.
20 Saw 2004.
19 The Void 2016.
18 A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984.
17 Ring 1998.
16 The Autopsy of Jane Doe 2016.
15 The Fog 1980.
14 The Descent 2005.
13 Night of the Living Dead 1968.
12 Triangle 2009.
11 The Blair Witch Project 1999.
10 Pans Labyrinth 2006.
9 In the Mouth of Madness 1994.
8 Shock Waves 1977.
7 The VVitch 2015.
6 The Omen 1976.
5 Event Horizon 1997.
4 The Poughkeepsie Tapes 2007.
3 The Creature from the Black Lagoon 1954.
2 Hereditary 2018.
1 The Hole 2009.

I find it nearly impossible to put them in order. I like the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE just as much as the HAUNTING, or  any of these, just in different ways. Sigh.

4. the HAUNTING (1963)
5. ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1955)
6. KILL, BABY, KILL (1966)
7. NOSFERATU (1922)
8. the THING (1982)
9. FRANKENSTEIN (1931)
10. CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)
11. WHITE ZOMBIE (1932)
12. BLACK SUNDAY (1960)
13. the EXORCIST (1973)
14. DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932)

Quote from: RCMerchant on October 04, 2024, 01:13:09 AM^ I always wanted to ask you-why don't you like the SHINING?

I loved the book - I was 12 when I got it as a birthday gift - and when Dad told me that a movie was being released, I begged to be allowed to see it and even my Mom agreed.

I went there all excited, expecting to see the book I loved onscreen and what I saw actually made me cry. That was in 1980, I've never forgotten it and it was the first time I saw a great book being so absolutely trashed onscreen.

There are some plus points about the movie, the scary visuals, the music, the cinematography and some truly nasty shocks, like that thing in the bath and the injured guest saying "Great party, isn't it?" 😳

I wrote a whole review for it on here but I didn't like it then. I was asked at a college class what my least fave movie was, I said "The Shining" and someone threw an eraser at me 😳😉

'Sokay, Trevor, lots of people dislike THE SHINING - Stephen King included!

I think I read the book when I was vveeeeeeeery young (3rd or 4th grader?) and loved it. It's possible I tried to watch the film before that - the first time I tried I tapped out during the long car ride to the Overlook - the tension (even that aerial shot!) overwhelmed me. I was getting long in the tooth to be getting scared during scary movies - I was maybe 8 or 9! I returned to watch the entire film a couple years later and... I was disappointed, too. The book is (mostly) fabulous, and the film is it's own thing. It took another couple tries before I could appreciate the book as a Kubrick film rather than as a King adaptation. Then again, most King adaptations ain't great, right?

Anyway. this isn't a SHINING thread, so - I'll post my list in three weeks, probably. Thanks for doing this, Rev.

I, too, love the book and read it before I saw the film, and yes, the changes in places are glaring, but it's nearly impossible to translate the written word to film or vice versa. I just love both-just in different ways. If it were exactly like the book we would have spent an hour of the film just watching Jack sitting in the basement reading old newspaper clippings.

No, like the Rev I was planning on editing it a bit before the final. I made the initial list in no particular order of what my favourite horror movies would be and then figured  I'd sort it out into a better order later. Ring isn't my absolute top horror movie either on the other end of the scale (Alien and The Thing will have to fight it out for top spot).

More of a sci-fi/fantasy/monster/special FX fan than a horror fan, but I'll still give this a shot. This list is limited to films I'm sure I've seen.

What does it mean to be "the Greatest"? I'd say the most influential films are he greatest, so...

25pts The Lost World (1925) - Set up the whole giant monster genre
24pts The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Made German Expressionist films popular, which stuck with the horror genre for 30 or so years.
23pts Dracula - Set up Universal's horror-cycle in the 30's
22pts Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1950's) - Set up sci-fi horror of the 50's
21pts The Horror of Dracula - Hammer brought back Gothic horror
20pts Halloween - Slasher films become major, main stream successes

That sets up the beginning of the horror genre, & outlines major changes in it. I'll have to come back later, to add more, fleshing out each era.

Ok! I'm back, with a few more:

19pts Frankenstein
18pts The Wolfman
17pts The Mummy

Universal's monster films are iconic; they are still the standard versions of their respective monsters.

16pts - And Then There Were None - Kinda a bridge between Old Dark House films & Slashers. Also a nice mystery with good camera work & suspense.
15pts - THEM! - Great example of a nuclear monster movie. Think it was the first.
14pts - The Blob - I need to include a 50's Teen movie, & this is one of the best.
13pts - King Kong - While "The Lost World" was the first major giant monster film, this one fleshed out the concept.
12pts - Godzilla: King of the Monsters - And this is the most iconic radioactive monster movie.
11pts - JAWS - Made major studios pay attention to genre films. Set up the modern blockbuster.
10pts - Jurassic Park - Major leap forward in FX, & some fairly suspenseful scenes.

Still deciding on the others; numbers subject to change.

9pts - The Thing - Good FX work, which still holds up well today.
8pts - Alien - A nice creepy movie. I would've ranked it higher, but it took a lot from earlier films, most of which I've not seen yet.
7pts - Psycho -  This should probably be higher, but I found it a bit slow..

6pts - Colossus: The Forbin Project - I think 2001 did it first, but this was one of the first films to deal with an out-of-control AI. And the computer is the main focus of the movie; in 2001 the focus is on human evolution; HAL is just an obstacle.

5pts - Night of the Living Dead - Redefined what a zombie is. Also make a ridiculous concept feel real. Could be higher, but it took a lot from "I Am Legend."

I'm not sure if I've seen anything else of note. So I'll fill in the rest with some movies that are just fun.

4pts - Tormented - Bert I. Gordon's ghost movie is fun.

3pts -  Gremlins - More of a comedy, but it does have some creepy segments.

2pts -  The Ghost & Mr. Chicken - A Comedy through & through. But that scene where the organ starts playing is creepy.

1pt -  Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein - Not scary at all, even as a kid. But It gave Lugosi another chance to play Dracula, & he did a good job.

Less than two weeks until Halloween, everyone else is invited to submit their lists! We have 6 voters which creates a pretty good consensus, but more is always better.

A lotta' good films hit the floor - either due to technicalities, equivocation/waffling, or I ran out of time and couldn't watch 'em or re-watch 'em.

The order doesn't totally satisfy me but the films themselves I'll stan for. I could've made much smarter picks to leverage other people's picks - but I'm a dumb guy, what can I tell you?

OK, with 7 voters, this is how it finally shook out. I wish we could have got a few more voters to break some of the ties, but the way it works out at least everyone's top three choices end up somewhere in the top 25:

1. The Thing (1982)                           95
2. Alien (1979)                                   78
3. Psycho (1960)                      67
4. The Shining (1980)                      57
5. Night of the Living Dead (1968)      52
6. Jaws (1975)                              51
7. Halloween (1978)                      49
8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)      42
9. Frankenstein (1931)                      40
10 (tie). Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)   35
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)      35
12. The Exorcist (1973)            33
13 (tie). The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)   32
Dracula (1931)               32
15. The Omen (1976)            30
16 (tie). Dawn of the Dead (1978)      29
Suspiria (1977)               29
Videodrome (1983)            29
19 (tie). Possession (1981)         25
Pieces (1982)               25
The Lost World (1925)            25
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)              25
23 (tie). Bride of the Monster (1955)      24
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)      24
25 (tie). The Haunting (1960)         23
Hausu (1977)               23
The Mutilator (1981)            23
The Wicker Man (1973)            23

The top 10 is pretty good. Thanks everyone! I think I'll try to compile another list like this with "bad movies" on it.

Nice idea Rev, thanks for doing it. I thought the top picks would only have a few votes between them.

I've seen worse lists, for sure! The top 2 are hard to argue w/ in any case.

RC, was your list ranked by points? When I saw you had RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD @ #3 I though it would be a lock for the final list...

THE MUTILATOR was a surprise for me. Never seen it. Guess I should check it out!

^ Was it ranked by points? I- I guess so. I ranked it lower than some...I dunno...
(As far as the MUTILATOR- I don't know who voted for that piece of s**t, but one man's poison, I guess...)

The complete spreadsheet I used is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e4IRWXUA8dNhIqGz0yZdigAgB5rTbXrx0BvWESbxElg/edit?gid=0#gid=0

You can see things like how many people voted for a particular movie. (My excuse for not voting for THE THING: I've never seen it. But enough other people gave it a lot of points that it still ended up #1, which is why getting lots of votes is important!)

^ You've never seen the THING?  :buggedout:
You really need to. It's so much better than the average remake. As far as remakes go- it's right up their with INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978).

Ehh, I'm sure Rev will get around to it one day. There are so many canonical films I've never seen that........ it makes me want to not participate in "Greatest" movie lists! But I held my nose and still participated in this one, and I'm glad I did.

Anyway, THE THING is one of those rare classics, like THE GODFATHER, that deserves all its hype. I think ALIEN pretty much fills that bill, too.

BODY SNATCHERS '78... perennially underrated! I'm glad it got a spot on this list.
