So this is a franchise I've never seen any instalments of, not even the first one, but I've suddenly realised I might enjoy it. The original batch that is, doubt I'd enjoy the post 2000 ones tbh, but maybe...
Any thoughts and opinions on the quality of this series? did it go downhill after the first one?
I just watched the trailers for the first 3. the 3rd one actually looks pretty funny.
They certainly pumped those early sequels out fast
(also posting this as a poll to see if I can do one that allows multiple votes this time) edit - yay, it worked.
I've seen the old ones, the Tim Burton one and the first of the new ones. It seemed to be well enough made and acted but I just couldn't get into it and it left me cold. I've not bothered with any of the follow-ups.
the fact that Tim Burton did the remake also passed me by somehow... just watched the trailer and it looks like any random actiony sci fi film.
I've seen all the new ones except the newest. I have seen none of the first series except in bits and pieces on TV (probably enough bits and pieces that I'm fairly familiar with it). I'd say see either, skip the Tim Burton one, obviously. Unfortunately the first one has probably been spoiled for you (especially if you watched the Simpson's musical version!)

that's ringing a vague bell but not enough to actually remember specifics... I don't mind really
They finally made a monkey out of me...!
I think I saw all the old ones as a kid and (besides the first) it's hard to keep 'em straight in my head. Only saw the first new one w/ Franco. The Burton one sucks, though perhaps is worth Youtubing only for the one scene where Charlton Heston (as an elderly ape!) gives a moving speech about the danger of firearms!!! :bouncegiggle:

I can only imagine Burton had a gun pointed at his head during that bit? :bouncegiggle:
The first 6 films for me.
I enjoyed the first one the most, especially that ending 😳😳😳

I'd love to believe it was a late life change of heart. More plausibly he was of an age where he was no longer able to understand the subtext or possibly even the text of his dialogue. :bluesad: Is it wrong though to trick the mentally infirm into moral rectitude?

Not if they're disguised as an ape.

I seen all of the old series and 2 of the new ones.
The first film I ever saw in a theater was the 1968 version. I was 6. A fond memory.
quite a badass 1st movie to see, (well compared to mine which was SNOW WHITE)
edit, no it wasn't, it was 101 DALMATIONS
just checked to see if the new one had actually come out yet, wasn't sure. was released to cinemas in May apparently
I love the first five or so...the original up to Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Some might not like the costumes, etc, but I like that stuff is mainly all practical effects.
I did see Burton's remake. Wasn't fond of it.
I've heard the new series is good. Just haven't gotten to them yet.
I've seen every single one. Watched all the POTA movies on TV as a kid on USA Network and Sci-Fi Channel.
1994 Planet of the Apes films hosted by Roddy McDowall on Sci-Fi Channel (tried to do as a YouTube Link)

A bonding moment for me and my father. We've seen every single one since, better or worse.
That's cool that you and your father could bond over the APES, Cult Moody! Also, I love your thumbnail image.
I liked Rise and Dawn but after that I felt they were dragging things out too much. In Rise, there's a background story of astronauts disappearing on a mission and I've been waiting for them to come back to that since Dawn.
I thought both Dawn and War had similarities to Battle for the Planet of the Apes, which was a surprise as it's regarded as the worst of the original series. But I really like the original. Charlton Heston's character is spot on and I can still remember the first time I saw the ending. It seems obvious now but I was young at the time and it had the desired effect. Heston's reaction is still brilliant though.
I have since seen KINGDOM and thought it was pretty good. In fact, I voted for it for "Best Visual Effects" of the year, but it didn't win.

My parents were a tad overprotective in my Elementary level years. I loved sci-fi and horror but was limited to to older movies/TV. So I grew up on the likes of Star Trek, Universal Monsters, Godzilla, 50's sci-fi films and so on. In the grand scheme of things I guess I benefited. XD
As for Daria, I finally watched the whole series with my wife this year. Mr. Anthony DeMartin became a spirit animal.
since making this thread I've broken my monkey and watched ESCAPE FROM... it was alright. surprisingly heavy on the comedy / absurdity angle... also there are so many liberties taken with the basic logistics of apes speaking perfect english, that I guess you just have to dive right in and buy the entire premise wholesale. 6/10

I was an early DARIA-adopter... from S1 when I was in undergrad. It remains one of my all-time favorite TV shows and has aged very, very well, as is evidenced (among other things) by a recent musical subgenre called "Dariacore" that is inspired by the series........ DeMartino wasn't as funny to me 28 years ago but as an old man I find I have become him in some alarming ways. :bluesad: :bouncegiggle:
