I never grasped what the security concern was. The Chinese government was going to get intelligence on American teenage girls' favorite K-Pop bands? I'm sure there's more to it but I never looked into what the concerns might be.

I have never Tikked nor Tokked, so the ban will have no effect on my life whatsoever.
TikTok was excellent for passing time when I was in the hospital for six weeks.
It's not banned here in Germany, though.
TikoTok always felt like the worst aspects of Youtube mixed with the wost aspects of Twitter to me.
It always felt very "attention whore" to me, even more than most social media things.
I never saw the appeal... It seemed like a copy of a bunch of other stuff that was already out there...

From my own experience, it depends on the content you're watching but yeah, TikTok is filled with narcissistic idiots and rage bait videos.
It is a haven for QAnon madness and other outrageous conspiracy bulls**t. The scariest part about this is that these videos get millions of views and likes.
They didn't ban it because it's stupid or for attention whores, though. It was for political reasons. First because it was Chinese, but ultimately it was the free Palestine stuff, which is like kryptonite to people in DC, that caused them to fully censor it. It's for our own good, you see!

Trump started talking about banning it in 2020, before the current Palestinian brouhaha. Congress held hearings and talked about doing something for four years. I think Palestine timing is just a coincidence.
There was talk of banning it over antipathy to China, as I said, but it didn't come to a full ban until after Oct 7

The more I read about this, the less I understand the rationale. Even if you don't use Tik Tok or care about the service, I think you should be skeptical of the government shutting down an entire service. Congress has a burden of proof to convince us this extraordinary step is merited and they've basically just said "trust us, they can do really bad stuff, we can't tell you what it is but trust us it's bad."
There are a lot of things that disturb me about the near future of this country...the fate of Tik Tok is not high on that list.
