so after finding out in the FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES thread there are at least 5 unconnected movie sequels that have the word 'Bloodlines' (or Bloodline) in the title, what other words tend to crop up in the names of movie sequels?
I'll start the ball rolling very slowly with...
"2"
there's a bunch that go for "TOO" instead (SPLASH TOO, TEENWOLF TOO etc)
---- to clarify: I'm looking for specific words that two or more unconnected sequels have used in their titles. (and I don't mean words like "the" or "and"...)
"Return"
Return of the Jedi, The Mummy Returns, Batman Returns, etc.
A number of sequels incorporate the phrase "strikes back" in reference to the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (e.g. JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK). But I just now realized THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK may have copied its title from earlier movies: 1943's THE FALCON STRIKES BACK, 1946's THE SPIDER WOMAN STRIKES BACK.
yeah I would've assumed that started with the STAR WARS one...maybe not

the classic!
along the same lines...
REVENGEJAWS: THE REVENGE, PORKY'S REVENGE, REVENGE OF THE SITH, REVENGE OF THE CREATURE
'Resurrection'
As in Alien: Resurrection, Halloween Resurrection etc.

ah yes, reliable sequel word right there
few more from imdb search:
MECHANIC: RESURRECTION Jason Statham
BIRDEMIC 2: THE RESURRECTION (didn't know that?)
THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS
ATLANTIC RIM: RESURRECTION (1.9 imdb score!)
"Bride of," "Son of."
aye... just for the sake of it I'll list a couple each
SON OF FLUBBER (1962)
SON OF THE MASK (2005)
BRIDE OF CHUCKY (1998)
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935)
also BRIDE OF REANIMATOR (1990), didn't know that one either...
AWAKENING seems quite popular
SPECIES 4: THE AWAKENING
THE OMEN IV: THE AWAKENING
UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING
AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING
ZOMBIE NIGHT 2: THE AWAKENING
IP MAN: THE AWAKENING
I mean doesn't the word just strike fear into your heart? :buggedout:
also STAR WARS franchise seems to be ticking most of these off, almost following suit here with EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS
"Begining"
The EXORCIST: THE BEGINING (2004)
the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE:THE BEGINING (2006)
FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINING (1985)
PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINING (1990)
WRONG TURN 4: BLOODY BEGININGS (2011)
haha, yep...
and at the other end of the spectrum, THE FINAL CHAPTER
FRIDAY 13TH PART 4: THE FINAL CHAPTER
RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER
LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER
ANGEL III: THE FINAL CHAPTER
You won't see it today, but: 2000
Pokemon The Movie 2000
Godzilla 2000
Any others? I can think of one or two standalone films.

good point...
off the top of my head, BLUES BROTHERS 2000 was a sequel
ok so there's also RISE OF...
TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE
DESCENDANTS: THE RISE OF RED
MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU
TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS
and of course...
STAR WARS EPISODE IX: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
- G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA appears to be the first entry, not a sequel
ANOTHER
ANOTHER 48 HOURS
ANOTHER 9 1/2 WEEKS
...thought that might be it but there's ANOTHER DIRTY MOVIE (some NATIONAL LAMPOONS sequel I'm more than happy to claim ignorance of until now)
Not many of note that I could find, but "A New Beginning"...
Friday The 13th: A New Beginning
Quote from: LilCerberus on April 01, 2025, 03:39:57 PMNot many of note that I could find, but "A New Beginning"...

RC got that covered... (well just the 'beginning', minus the 'new')

"Back"
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Major League: Back to the Minors, Police Academy 3: Back in Trainin, Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit
"Next" or "Next Generation"
The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation
"First"
X-Men: First Class, Star Trek: First Contact, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, Police Story 4: First Strike
good calls, those ones didn't occur to me... getting some slight overlap here, e.g. STRIKES BACK (which we've had), and just 'BACK' in general. that's fine though
another one... CURSE OF
PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL
CURSE OF CHUCKY
WALLACE AND GROMMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT
HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS
CURSE OF THE PUPPET MASTER
RESURGENCE
INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE
THE IMMORTAL WARS: RESURGENCE
300: THE RESURGENCE (in development)
I considered THE LEGEND OF..., however despite being used for a few sequels (ANCHORMAN, CITY SLICKERS, ST. TRINIAN'S) it seems to be used even more frequently for standalone movies, or first installments, so not gonna count that one.
I dunno if these count, but i think its funny when movies have dates/times in their titles and their sequels just change the date to a later one
see:
28 DAYS LATER --> 28 WEEKS LATER --> 28 YEARS LATER
CLASS OF 1984 --> CLASS OF 1999

yeah definitely a sequel-y trick... I suppose more loosely we could have '
Change of time frame' as a thing?
SALVATION
TERMINATOR SALVATION
THE CROW: SALVATION
almost certainly a coincidence (?) but...
AMITYVILLE 1992: IT'S ABOUT TIME
THE LAST SHARKNADO: IT'S ABOUT TIME
