Fan theories are so much fun, and many of them are plausible.
A fan theory which turned out to be accurate was the scifi action movie Soldier (1998) being set in the same universe as Alien (1979-now), Blade Runner (1982) and even Joss Whedon's series Firefly.
Some of my favourites include:
The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008) was a former specops or black ops soldier, due to his knowledge of weapons and tactics, and his reference to a truckload of soldiers being blown up in Iraq.

Total Recall (1990) - the entire movie is a memory implant. This was later confirmed by the director in the director's commentary, and if you watch Total Recall with the idea that everything is a memory implant, it makes complete sense. But this article points out factors that suggest it wasn't.

There are many more fan theories, and some of the coolest ones can be found in the unique YouTube channel What Is Antilogic:
https://www.youtube.com/@whatisantilogic138/videos
His theories include the ideas that Jason in Friday the 13th is a disabled boy and the movies are his dreams/hallucinations/fantasies; that the Creeper in Jeepers Creepers is actually a Predator; and that Helena Bonham-Carter's character in Fight Club doesn't exist either, she is another personality of Edward Norton/The Narrator just like Tyler Durden.
AWESOME new thread which I will probably tread lightly in to avoid spoilers :bouncegiggle: and perhaps decline to contribute to....... though goodness knows I have no shortage of lunatic theories about movies that Conventional Wisdom has declared Solved.......
I don't even like the movie, but I've heard a theory about The Blair Witch Project that suggests there was nothing supernatural going on. Mike and Josh set the whole thing up to kill Heather.
To copy from another site...
The theory says the real killers in The Blair Witch Project were Mike and Josh, who agreed to make the documentary with Heather only so they could kill her. In this way, they created all the creepy noises and moments themselves and passed them off as being the witch to keep Heather invested.
Some evidence backing this up is the fact that Heather never knew Mike before the documentary, the plausibility that Mike and Josh set out ritualistic items outside their campsite while Heather slept, and the fact that Josh disappeared during their discovery of the murder house and Mike led Heather in before she was killed.

One of my faves is that Sandy in
Grease drowned after not being rescued by Danny and the whole film is her pre death dream. It also goes on to say that the car flying away at the end is her and Danny flying up to heaven.
The events of Stranger Things aren't really happening, and it's just the main characters having one really long campaign in Dungeons and Dragons.

I needed that LOL thanks 😆🐢
Personally, I've always thought the "it's all a dream" theories were lazy, unless your movie is specifically about dreams, or something similar.
The Total Recall theory makes sense, because you're directly referencing something that's actually a part of the plot.
honestly never had a 'theory' about any movie... so let me invent one:
*The reason Pee Wee wanted his bike back so bad is because it had a stash of cocaine hidden in the seat

Maybe he didn't want the government finding out what was really fueling that jet engine.....
The events of the Harry Potter films don't happen. It's all just some kind of fever dream from abuse he suffered from his horrible foster parents as he's sleeping in the pantry under the stairs. His "mark" on his head is a lump/cut inflicted by the family
My fan theory is that ET is actually supposed to be Jesus.
When he gets to Earth, no one knows or realizes who he really is.
His Earth Mother's name is Mary.
He has one true disciple in Elliott.
He performs miracles (of a kind)
He is persecuted.
He dies.
He is resurrected.
He disappears again into the heavens.
The Max in Fury Road is the Feral Child from The Road Warrior.
This is pretty much silly but I love the long way of explain going from Mel to Tom Hardy instead of just excepting the logical choice "We got another actor."

Now that you've got me thinking about it, what if actor Russell Johnson was really Doctor Who (I mean, consider the kind of roles he's known for), and he couldn't get the cast of Gilligan's Island home was because his TARDIS was in Hawaii, & Gilligan broke his sonic screwdriver......................

John Mason, the character played by Sir Sean Connery in THE ROCK, is actually an imprisoned James Bond.
The entire sequence of events in the TV series ST ELSEWHERE takes place in the mind of a young autistic person.
In Billy Joel's famous music video "Piano Man," Billy is playing in a gay bar but doesn't know it.
The lyrics sure do fit that theory. . .
SUPERMAN is just Clark Kent dreaming that he's Superman.
There were no tornados in TWISTER, it was just a dream.
There was no shark in JAWS, it was just chief Brody having a dream about a shark.
NUTTY PROFESSOR 2: THE KLUMPS was just a dream.
I appear to be turning into quite the 'fan' here.

That "real-estate novelist... never had time for a wife"....... suuuuuuure! He and Davey the Lifer from the Navy were havin' a nice chat, no question.
I LOL'd @ the "St. Elsewhere" non-theory, but please explain the Neil Breen one to me....... I've only see one Neil Breen film but I could scarcely imagine a
worse film somehow hiding below the surface of or inside of that film.......

Wow, I didn't think this thread would get so many great responses!
Speaking of James Bond, I saw one on reddit recently: James Bond is a Time Lord, with their enhanced physical and mental capabilities that allow him to do what he does. He looks different every so often because he regenerates! :teddyr:
ET & Star Wars are part of the same universe. This is why ET recognizes Yoda, & this is why there are some ETs in... Attack of the Clones? The Phantom Menace?

I will maintain it isn't a "theory" as it is the actual canonical ending to the series.
Similarly it isn't a Theory that the events of NEWHART were all a dream experienced in the subconscious mind of the main character from THE BOB NEWHART SHOW. It's a Fact! {insert GIF of the KITH "It's A Fact!" Girl here}
The attack on the Death Star was insurance fraud. I mean, this guy gets a wonder weapon built at great expense and then his son destroys it in a highly improbable attack, while he himself is conveniently the only survivor? Come on!

And the reason he didn't kill his son and was conveniently catapulted out to space was because his son's best pals suddenly showed up out of nowhere? I think there should be Death Star truthers in universe, with Darth Vader force choking some of them every so often.
I like the one that Signs isn't about aliens. Its about demons
The indoraptor from JW:Fallen Kingdom had some human DNA in its genetic code. Specially Charlotte Lockwood' DNA, making it and the clone Maisie siblings so to speak. That's why it seemed to be a lot smarter then the other dinosaurs and had a particular interest in Maisie.
My theories about Uncle Uwe Boll's movies like ALONE IN THE DARK and HOUSE OF THE DEAD is that they were filmed to get gamers away from their consoles and arcade machines. 😉😉
