Title: Unofficial Horror Movie Universes
Post by: claws on July 21, 2026, 08:38:02 AM
All unofficial universes by Google.

Probably the best known.

"John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy"

The Thing (1982), Prince of Darkness (1987), and In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

Next one comes from reddit:

"Destructive Power of the Ancient Occult"

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), The Blair Witch Project (1999), and Hereditary (2018)

I always thought they were similar long before the internet decided they are part of an unofficial universe.

"Sci-Fi Hell"

Event Horizon (1997) and Hellraiser (1987)

I wasn't aware of the next one.

"The Ultimate Halloween Anthology"

Trick 'r Treat (2007) and The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

and

"The Industrial Sadism Matrix"

Cube (1997) and Saw (2004)

If anything, they should make fir a fun Halloween watch. Do you know of any unofficial horror movie universes?

Bride of Chucky, Chucky's evidence locker includes Freddy's glove, Jason's mask, Michael Myers' mask, and Leatherface's chainsaw.

Also, The Rise of Leslie Vernon treats Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger as real historical killers.

On top of that, Freddy's glove can be seen in the Evil Dead Cabin and the necronomicon and Kanderian dagger from Evil Dead are seen in Jason goes to hell, which also shows Freddy at the end.

So ...
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Child's Play
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween
Evil Dead
Rise of Leslie Vernon
...

all part of the same Universe.

... and if you want to count comicbook crossovers, we can add...

Vampirella
Evil Ernie
Hack/Slash
Hatchet
Re-animator
Nightbreed
The Crow

This one has occasionally occurred to me:

Fulci's THE BEYOND
Argento's INFERNO
Polanski's THE NINTH GATE
Michael Winner's THE SENTINEL

...All are about occult (in the literal sense) or cryptic portals to the netherworld, just hangin' out surreptitiously though more or less in plain sight. There must be more movies in this unofficial universe that I've yet to recall...

Terror Circus (1973)
Phase IV (1974) Cosmic radiation, but still radiation.
The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

INFERNO is part of its own Argento trilogy as well isn't it? not sure if the other 2 SUSPIRIA and MOTHER OF TEARS would really fit into that universe you've described though

Apparently there is a difference between Telepathy and Telekinesis

None of the human characters in Poltergeist (1982) use telekinesis. Instead, the telekinetic and supernatural phenomena—such as moving chairs, floating objects, and bending items—are caused entirely by the malicious ghosts and spirits haunting the house, rather than any psychic powers wielded by the family or the paranormal investigators.

No, the characters in the 1984 Firestarter film do not use telekinesis. Instead, they possess other psychic abilities: Charlie McGee (Drew Barrymore) has pyrokinesis (the power to create and control fire), her father Andy (David Keith) has a form of mind control/telepathy called "the push", and her mother Vicky's abilities are telepathic.

Contradiction:

Firestarter (1984): A young Drew Barrymore stars as Charlie McGee, a girl who exhibits severe pyrokinesis (a subset of telekinesis focused on fire creation) due to secret government experiments conducted on her parents.

QuoteWhile pyrokinesis is often categorized under the broader umbrella of psychic powers, it is strictly the creation and control of fire, whereas telekinesis is the movement of physical objects with the mind. Charlie controls flames, not the physical objects themselves. Thank you for catching that oversight.

No characters in Summer of Fear use telekinesis. The supernatural and psychological elements in the 1978 horror-suspense film directed by Wes Craven are instead based entirely on traditional witchcraft, manipulation, and voodoo-style spells rather than mind powers or moving objects with the mind.

No characters in Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers use telekinesis.

Psychic Connection vs. Telekinesis

Telepathy, Not Telekinesis: Young Jamie Lloyd and Michael Myers share a psychic and telepathic link, meaning she can sense his emotions, see through his eyes, and react when he kills, but no objects are moved with the mind.

No Object Movement: Throughout the film, physical actions and traditional slasher violence are used instead of any supernatural movement of objects.

Movies where DennisHopper plays the villain ruling over a post Apocalyptic civilization and is opposed by John Leguizamo.

Land of the Dead
Super Mario Bros.

Waterworld comes close to be a third entry, but lacks John Leguizamo.

I would add The Fury (1978) to the Telekinesis Girl list though:

The Model Train Experiment: Early in the film, while being tested at the Paragon Institute, Gillian demonstrates her natural abilities by using telekinesis to manipulate and dramatically accelerate a model train around a track.

Deflecting and Throwing Objects: As her powers grow and she learns to control them, she is able to deflect objects and use telekinetic force to push people and things away from her.

"Suburban Gothic Intruder" Universe based on Fright Night (1985)

It takes the classic 'Boy (Girl) Who Cried Wolf' framework and embeds it into a modern neighborhood setting.

Fright Night (1985)
Night Visitor (1989)
Never Cry Werewolf (2008)

What makes this Universe special is that not only does Night Visitor and Never Cry Werewolf use the same 'Fright Night' blueprint, they also use the same characters with different names.

I knew that would happen.  :drink:

If by "universe" we mean simply "genre", then all of these are fine.

ZNO, you are correct, GATES OF HELL does seem related to THE BEYOND and the other films, though a little more uncertainly. (I only watched it once and it made little sense to me.) In spite of it being seen as part of the trilogy, HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY has no, no relationship to THE BEYOND or GATES OF HELL - it's about an undead mutant mad scientist hiding in a basement. There is communication between the worlds of the living and the dead (ghosts) and a character crosses over at the end, but there's no hidden portal to aitch-ee-double-hockey sticks.

SUSPIRIA, INFERNO, and MOTHER OF TEARS are an Official trilogy - nominally about a coven of immortal witches (or something). That concept introduced in SUSPIRIA (which has no portal to the underworld) is referred to sort of indirectly in INFERNO (which has a portal to the underworld but no witches, really - I mean I dunno exactly what's going on in INFERNO, it is bloody wicked cool, though). I cringe to admit I never watched MOTHER OF TEARS, so I'll trust you on that.

I think it's a bit more nuanced than 'genre'. more like some trend that exists almost covertly, within a certain genre... something that you would never find a section for in Blockbuster, but is still prevalent enough to be a thing. (?)

I have watched it twice and genuinely have no recollection of a single thing about it.

- and I only watched it TWICE because of this exact reason  :bouncegiggle:

I always feel like The Void, Event Horizon and In the Mouth of Madness belong together, even the endings don't quite fit in.
