Title: Great Comic Story into Movies
Post by: BlackAngel on July 01, 2002, 10:32:46 PM
I've read Wizard article on the 100 best trade paperback  of all time and I was thinking what story  would be good movies.  Maybe the X-Men's Dark Phoenix Saga, or Hulk's  Future Imperfect, or Batman's Dark Knight Returns.  It's just a thought so, you like it or not?  Discuss.

I was also thinking the Preacher would a good idea for a movie.  Also the Watchmen.

I think there has been talk of an Evil Ernie movie for...around 5 years now.

I too, would love to see it.

WATCHMEN is in perpetual talks.  Recently, screenwriter David Hayter has been talking about adapting it to film.  (http://www.comics2film.com/WatchmenArch.shtml)  I think it's not such a good idea.

For one, the story is a little too dense to put into a two hour movie.  Even a three hour movie.  A miniseries might do the trick, but that's it.

But more importantly, so much of WATCHMEN is is specific to the comic book medium.  Visual motifs repeating themselves.  Words commenting on pictures.  Even the form of comic book gets involved.  (Check out that Rorschach chapter where the panels are mirror images of themselves on opposite sides of the book.)

You could make the movie, but it would lose so much of what makes WATCHMEN intriguing.  Not to mention, WATCHMEN assumes a knowlege of superhero conventions a general audience would not have.

You may be able to tell I've cooled off on comic movie adaptions.  Mostly because comic fans seem so eager nowadays to prostrate themselve to the movie gods.  But then I've cooled off on books being made into movies, movies turned into novelizations, video games turned into comic books. . . Sure it can be done well, but what's the point?

All that being said, I wouldn't see a well done PREACHER movie.  (Too bad I have visions of PROPHECY 3 in my head.)

WTACHMEN is impressive as a comic medium tale, but as film?......neat trick if ya could do it. The Tick as a movie sounds good to me, but don't let the same people as did the live show do it. Also, Astro City, with Sam Rami at the helm, as he seems to "get"the medium.

The Killing Joke.  Forget a new Batman flick, a Joker movie would kick bottom!!!
