What's the best audience reaction you've seen at the theater? The most annoying? When I saw Minority Report most of the other patrons went "ew," when they saw the black market surgeon's snot and his nurse's mole, then completely covered their eyes as the clamps were inserted into Anderton's eyes, a la Clockwork Orange. They were more grossed out by something touching someone's eye than by gobs of snot and a huge skin growth. The most annoying for me is when people laugh at something that either isn't meant to be funny or is a tiny gag, because they feel it's supposed to be funny and they want everyone to know they "got" it. CLose second is when someone's explaining what's happening to their companion. "He's the killer? See? He's the killer."
The young kid talking a mile a minute about nothing let alone the movie. My own son does this all the time. But it was a thankful diversion from the pain called MIB2

And when I saw Halloween H20 it was a mostly black audience so when LL Cool J "died" they started to Boo And yell THIS MOVIE SUCKS! then as soon as LL came back they start to cheer again.
Me and my dad went and saw SPIDER-MAN one night. Of course, we were impressed and we liked the film. But, when Green Goblin died by having his flying machine ram into him right through the crouch area, my dad quickly said to me "And look where it hit him!" My inital reaction was "Ouch!"
As I look back on that fond memory, I still laugh at it!
I think the best one I ever was around for was watching "The Fellowship of the Ring". Right after Legolas killed the orc that shot Boromir, the entire audience applauded. No shouts, no whistles, just clapping.

The film I will always remember seeing in the theater was "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie." It was in Boston and the place was packed with MST fans. As the different characters appeared (Mike, Tom, Gypsy, Crow) everyone would start cheering and clapping. The place was alive with energy.

A few memorable reactions (one of which is at the review for "Sword and Sorcerer" at this site) most of them pleasant. Only one unpleasant..
we'll start with the unpleasant one.
"Poseidon Adventure"
Sister and I went to see this for the first time. Guy behind us had obviously seen it before, because he starts explaining it scene by scene to his friend next to him. And not when that scene was over, but, just before the scene started. Just ruined any surprise that the film might have had for us. I think the guy behind the guy finally told him to shut up, as I think he finally shut up. And let the rest of us get along with watching the movie without any more interruption.
"Romeo and Juliet" (1969)
Being a fan of Shakespeare's plays, I had to see this. Again, with my sister. I enjoyed the fight scenes the best. (Worth seeing just for that), but, when Romeo (Lenard Whiting) and Juliet (Olivia Hussey) died, there was such a weeping and a wailing from the girls in the audience, that I had never heard before or since. (At least until I saw "Love Story," when I was in college, and I saw it on television in the college dormitory. Seeing "Romeo and Juliet" later on, I still liked the fight scenes the best, but, I did have a better understanding as to why the girls cried at that point in the film.
"World's Greatest Athlete"
At the time when I saw the film, my father was in the U.S. Navy, so I got to see films at the movie theater at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, near to where we lived at the time, and where I saw this film. I can't really explain the scene, but, there is a scene in the film, where Nanu (Jan Michael Vincent) is going to get on a plane to fly back to Africa and Milo Jackson (Tim Conway) and Sam Archer (John Amos) are racing to the airport, in a car, to head him off. They're at the airport, when a car pulls out in front of them, their car goes into a skid, and is now traveling down the street sideways. Yet, they managed to park their car perfectly against the curb and between two other cars that are parked there. Then, they get out of their car and ran into the airport terminal. I still remember that almost everybody in the theater burst into spontaneous applause at the end of that scene.
"Zulu Dawn"
Another long story, so bear with mie. Being something of a prequel to "Zulu," I wanted to see "Zulu Dawn," because I was interested in the Zulu Wars, and because in the all-star cast, there was one or two of my favorite actors. But, the only place it was showing was Portland, Oregon. So, I took the bus from Tacoma, Washington, where I was living to Portland to see it. Fortunately, it was playing in a downtown theater, that was near the bus station. Now whether because of the theater's location, or because of the subject matter of the film, the theater was filled with American Indians. Never before or since have I seen so many American Indians in a theater before. If one is at all familiar with the story, one knows it is about an invading force of whites, who are wiped out by the black Zulus. So, any time one of the white actors was supposedly killed by the blacks, a big Indian war whoop would go up from the American Indians in the audience. (This is not the white man stereotyping the American Indian. There is a war whoop they make. It can't be described by most white men, but, you'd know it, if you heard it.) Instantly memorable, even if I felt a little strange at being one of the few whites in the audience. Anyway, a film well worth seeing, if one is interested in pre-20th century wars, as I am.

Most memorable = The end of Schindlers List. It was the first time i've ever been to a movie that gave the entire audience a stunned reaction. Nobody got up to leave until the credits were done, not a single person. IT was dead silent too.
Most Annoying = At the end of "The Mummy 2" the audience actually broke out in applause...yechhh
Most Funny = At "Sleepwalkers" the audience began to become revolted by the film (all the incest and then it began to get really corny). It hit it's peak when the deputy got stabbed in the back with a corncob..man you should have heard the crowd cheering and laughing
And when I went to see "Titanic" during a packed house on opening night the theater was packed, lots of teens and DiCaprio fans. Silence when Leo turns around wearing a tux and some girl shouts "YUMMY". It somehow struck everyone funny that for a good 5 minutes after we were still laughing about it.
Hannibal-When Ray Liotta took that cooked piece of his brain and ate it EVERBODY went nuts!!! Tons of "OHMYGOSH!!!", people laughing, people thinking they were gonna puke!
"A Time To Kill" got probably the most memorable reaction I have ever witnessed.
During Sam Jacksons "...I hope they burn in Hell" line the whole place erupted.
I am convinced to this day that if they would have found him guilty at the end of the film that a number of trash cans would be going through a number of windows that night.
I've heard applause at the end of films on numerous occasions...never really understood why people do that. It's not like the people on the screen can hear you!
The most annoying people at the movies to me seem to be old people. Kids can be bad sometimes, but they usually will pay attention enough to not have to explain everything to each other. I've had to change my seat due to old codgers on numerous occasions.
My story is kind of lame; A friend & I went to see Tales from the Darkside, The Movie and we ended up sitting behind a group of 3-5 young teenage girls. During the movie it's explained that before mummidying someone, Egyptians used to use a hook to pull the brain out the nose. Later in the movie, the mummy bends a wire into a hook and holds it up to one guy's nose. All of the girls in front of us just screamed "EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!".
When my dad and I saw HANNIBAL in the threatre (and this is true), I myself heard alot of people go "Oh my God" at the Ray Liotta brain eating scene. I was actualy laughing due to it's seemingly out-of-place black comedy (and I, as well as my dad were the ONLY ONES LAUGHING). At the end, one black girl said "I want my money back" and I was still laughing at that scene.
Now if only HANNIBAL played on a double bill with BRAINDEAD, that would have been a joy to behold!
Hey Chris we had simmilar audience reactions! Whoa! My brother said he was laughing so hard he missed the end of the movie! Me I was shocked, a little discusted but quite amussed. Definately one of the weirder things I've seen in a mainstream flick.
During attack of the clones my dad when Anakin was whining my dad said:
"For Christ's sake, act!"
After Spideman the whole audience applauded. That was brillaint.
Most annoying: While I was watching Batman Forever a little brat behind us kept whining 'BUT I WANT TO GO SEE CASPER!" Thankfully they left! Plus when watching The Lost World an annoying kid kept saying, "Where's the dinosaurs? Are the dinosaurs gonna appear?" (This was just after the film first started.) Eventually my mother had to ask the kid to quiet down
Another great audience reaction was in Jurassic Park when the T-Rex ate the lawyer on the toilet. Almost everyone laughed at that, including me.
Got a couple myself...
Best one was when I was watching "True romance". When Alabama (Patricia Arquette) manages to first knock out and later kill this huge thug, and old man from the audience stood up, raced to the corridor, clenched his fist towards the screen (meaning "You can't believe it yourselves!") and went out of the cinema.
A few months ago I went to see "Along came a spider" with some friends. When the final twist of the plot was revealed and the villains were on their expository dialohue "We did these and that and we are so evil", almost everybody in the theater went "Oh, so this was what happenned" at the same time. Very funny indeed.
Also I have find myself being the only one who was laughing. Last time it happenned during a spanish "Scream" clone. It was terrible, but damn funny, and when two of the main characters started making out in a blatant "Basic Instinct" rip off, I spent the whole scene laughing. Oh, the movie's name was "Tuno negro".
Got a couple more:
- At the opening night of "Star Wars - Episode I", all the audience started to applause and cheer while the opening fanfare and screen text appeared. That was beautiful.
- A bunch of young people arrived late at the "Sliver" session, and as they entered the dark room, one of them shouted "C'on people, stop masturbating". All the audience laughed in response.
Also, in The Lost World, when the Japanese busnessmen were running from the T-rex......we all knew what they were thinkin'! "Oh, S%#T, not agine!"
Just remembered another that sticks out. "Natural Born Killers" - the audience would laugh at the murder scenes and then realize what they were laughing at, revolt and gasp..then feel guilty. I saw people get up and leave, someone ahead of me leaned over and commented to a friend he felt like he was on acid...as he scratched his head. People genuinly looked confused. We had to take a questionaire afterward, I honestly felt the audience didn't "Get" the obvious message of the film, and the irony of what it was trying to poitn out about our society.
