I finally caught this one...and I was kinda disappointed. I love zombie movies and punk rock, so this should have been right up my alley. It was alright, I just found it to have too much exposition and dialogue, not enough of the good stuff: zombie carnage! I just don't consider it as great as everyone else seems to. When are we going to get another Dawn Of The Dead-type epic?
I didn't like it at first either, but I appreciate it more now. I think I was expecting something that was more along the lines of the original films--slow moving, mindless zombies--and I thought they tweaked with the original formula too much, but now I really enjoy it. I think it's one of the few horror comedies that actually works both as a horror film and as a comedy.
I dunno, I think DAWN is much worse in the exposition and dialogue department!
There's a loooong stretch in the middle where nothing happens.
Loved it from when I first saw- still love it now, one of my favorite movies of all time. The exposition is great, I always liked the over exagerrated characters like Suicide.
I'd Have to agree with J.R. I like it an all. But not as much as everyone else seems to.
I liked it because at the end they nuked Louisville, Kentucky. Not to mention the soundtrack is totally 80s.... which is pretty darned cool.
I hear they aren't going to be able to include one of the songs "Burn the Flames" on the new DVD due to rights issues. That sucks!
I used to own the soundtrack in high school. Everyone thought I was weird.
Dammit..."Burn The Flames" fit so perfectly...what the hell else are they going to use? That "Make Love Till We Die" new wave song? It's already used about 5 times in the movie...
Tarman, Chuck, Spider, and Freddy own ye all.
Actually the song that is missing is the Damned's "Dead Beat Dance" which is featured in Suicide's driving scene. I'm pretty sure burn the flames is still there. I have no idea what they replaced it with (some hard rock yelling song) but the song is still listed in the credits but isn't actually in the new mgm version of the movie ( it wasn't either with a 1991 ep skeletion cover release of the movie because of rights issues.) They also tweaked some of the sounds (O' Bannon's suggestion.)
Stacy Q was just as bad as she was then with SSQ- I never liked that song.

i really don't see how Return of the Living Dead is a "comedy" at all... part 2, yes, but the first one, no
and the whole point of the movie was to debunk NOTLD formula
You didn't think "Send more cops..." was funny? Or the split dogs?
I sure hope it's "Dead Beat Dance" that was cut and not "Burn the Flames," but I've heard otherwise. I'd rather they not tweak with the soundtrack too much.
Personally, I'm sick of all the different versions that are done. You have the theatrical version, the European version, the home video version, the expanded/extended version, the director's cut version and that's just the ones that are officially different. Then you have things like;
'The xxx release omits the scene after the car chase, but has expanded dialog in scene A, while the yyy version leaves out the closeup of the first guy, and has a different take of scene B. The new DVD release restores 2 scenes that were removed for the video release, but shortens the scene where they chase the killer as well as having alternate dialog for the ending. The cable TV version is mostly the xxx release, but with the alternate scene from the yyy release, while omitting 3 scenes that have only been seen in the theatrical version.'
How the hell can anyone say they've seen a complete movie anymore when every single release of it is different? Every time I watch a movie on cable or on video (I don't have a DVD player yet, but I hope to soon), I can't help wondering "Ok, how different is this from what people saw in the theater?" Here's a thought; make one version AND STOP SCREWING AROUND WITH IT!!!
I usually don't care for the cut scenes on DVDs--my opinion is that most of the time those scenes were cut for a reason--besides, these days most movies are too long, not too short.
However, I'd definitely be interested if the scenes significantly changed the film [like the original ending of American History X] or if more scenes of violence or other "bad" things were added--I'm interested in seeing the R-rated cut of LORD OF THE RINGS, for instance. But just hearing extra scenes of dialogue or characters walking around isn't my thing.
I guess we differ in opinion then, jmc. The cut scenes from Aliens were, I feel, somewhat detrimental to the film's overall quality. For instance, the maternal feeling Ripley has for Newt is best explained if one has seen the Special Edition of Aliens, as it has the scene near the beginning (right before the board meeting where Ripley is stripped of her officer status) where Ripley asks Burke what happened to her daughter, and Burke tells her that her daughter has died.
I liked how we get to see the colony as a thriving community brefore the aliens attack. I love alternate endings. The endings (all 4 of them) on the Se7en disc are great because each one changes the overall tone of the film. And of course there's the Army Of Darkness apocalypse ending, which, I feel, adds more of a sense of continuity to the series than the S-Mart one. With that coda intact each ED movie ends with Ash screaming. Then there's the fabled "suicide" ending for Dawn Of The Dead, though it's a mystery as to whether it was ever even shot.

I don't mean the officially deleted scenes. I'm talking about scenes that are omitted, shortened or different in the home versions. I'm also not talking about changes to the pan & scan version. I can't think of any examples right now, but I know I've seen them. The Scream movies used to have a bunch of differences listed, but for some reason, now it only lists the cut scenes.
I could've sworn I saw a clip of the original suicide ending somewhere...
Wha wha wha???
I saw this movie two years ago and although I have no desire to see it again, it was both entertaining and scared the crap outta me.
The first zombie (wet and black and fringey looking) and the half-zombie with the snaking spine, they're burned into my mind's eye forever.
The older man who crawls into a crematorium when he realizes he's turning into a zombie, with his overwrought crying - that will stay with me too. (Anyone recognize him in Mulholland Drive?)
