There are two movies I recall seeing a long time ago pre-1980, and I've started wondering what their names were.
The first one was a vampire movie and about the only thing I remember was that they used silver bullets to kill the vampires. It had a scene of one vampire being shot with regular bullets and then opening up his shirt to show the hero the bullet holes and that he wasn't affected by them. I *THINK* this saw movie ends with the lead vampire being impaled with a spear to a board, and then the hero opens the drapes to let in the sunlight, but I might be mixing it up with some other movie.
The second movie had some people digging in the woods and they find some giant armor that supposedly belonged to some legendary giant spanish warrior. I forget if you ever actually see the giant or not. I think at one point, they hung the armor on a tree to get an idea of how big the warrior was.
Anyone know the name of either of these?
Second one sounds like GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN.
I agree that the second film sounds like Giant from the Unknown.
The first one sounds almost like a cross between Love at First Bite (which has, as I recall, a scene with a vampire hunter shooting Dracula in the chest with ordinary bullets, only to learn that silver is the bullet of choice) and another movie.
Not saying that it is - just what it reminds me of.
...with the drapes being pulled back sounds like the end of the Dan Curtis/Jack Palance Dracula, a 1973 made for TV movie currently available on DVD, a double bill also featuring their version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
the vampire one almost sounds like Monster Squad but I don't remember the vampire opening his shirt to show that the bullet didn't do anything.
Near Dark? Hard to think of 80's vampire movies..there were so many. But I keep thinking this movie had something to do with guns, i haven't seen it in years.
...had a scene where Lance Henriksen is shot in the stomach/chest, and then coughs up the bullet as a sort of party trick.
Had a posse of wooden bullet shootin' vampires (you know, stake through the heart gimmick and all).
I agree that Giant from the Unknown is probably the second movie I was thinking of. Thanks!
As for the vampire movie, the Jack Palance version of Dracula *MIGHT* be it. I couldn't find a detailed enough description to know for sure. I do know that it wasn't any of the other movies mentioned. I probably saw it around 1975 or so. I don't remember anyone who was in it, but I do seem to recall that some scenes gave me the impression of an old west setting. In fact, I was tempted to describe it as a western with vampires. I keep picturing a scene with a main street that looked like it was out of a western and someone spying on or stalking someone on the ground from a balcony/walkway over a building. You know, like the place the bad guys always position themselves in a western so that they can ambush the hero. (I really suck at describing things sometimes!)
I was thinkng the first one may be Vampire Circus?
That first one, the scenes mentioned don't ring any bells, but, it does sound alot like "Curse of the Undead" w/ Michale Pate as the gunslinging vampire, Eric Fleming as the gunslinging preacher, Kathleen Crowley as the heroine, John Hoyt as the sawbones, Bruce Gordon as the non-vampiric villain, and Ed Binn as the lawman, called--appropriately enough--Bill, the Sheriff.
Worth checking out, for no other reason, then I believe it is the first western to feature a classic horror character, in this case, a vampire. And the the classic showdown between the hero and the villain, in which the hero gets the better of the villain, who could not be killed otherwise, by crafting a bullet out of a wooden cross.
As a side note, one of the villainous henchmen is played by stuntman Eddie Parker, who played in a ton of "bad" movies--both westerns and non-westerns--in his career. Enjoy!
