Title: Maniac (1980)
Post by: Brock on August 27, 2002, 05:59:01 PM
Anyone have any thoughts on this one?

A theater near me is doing midnight showings this weekend and I think I may go to it.  They've done this occasionally, previously with "Halloween" and "Psycho Beach Party" and I feel like I missed out on those, so I'll probably hit "Maniac" after checking out "feardotcom".

I dig it...the perfect 80s slasher flick.  It's put together a little better than most of the others at the time, and Savini does the effects.

Maniac is a good flick.  It really did freak me out, the ending is very creepy.  (all i'm saying don't wanna spoil it)  It's definetly worth your time to check out.

Lots of major league Tom Savini splatter here, such as a throat slashing, and a slowly filmed head scalping,as well as Savini's own head gorily exploding.
William Lustig really puts a heavy lot into his debut mainstream film, making as entertaining to the splatter fans and overly gruesome to the mainstream viewers(the killer[character actor/Lustig buddy Joe Spinell] here isn't quite a sympathetic or likable chap, which is what makes this film work)at the same time.
And,Caroline Munro appears in what was sadly one of her last film appearances(before retiring into motherhood, following Luigi Cozzi's 1989  outing "The Black Cat"),and is quite good here,as the unharmed survivor of the title character's attacks.

Upon closer nspection, the movie being shown is actually a semi-local indie horror film called "Maniacs"....something aboot a couple of serial killers meeting in an asylum and falling in love.....I'm still going though, cuz their ads for it are hilarious...

I can't find much info aboot the movie online or anything though, I just know what little I heard on the radio....

I'll let y'all know if it's trash or an undiscovered gem.
