You need to get this...it's one of the best releases I've seen in a while, and in a lot of places it's only arond 10 bucks! Despite what some of the geeks are saying on the DVD nerd sites, I think this is as close to an uncut version as we're ever gonna see. It also has a couple of making of documentaries, a commentary, and a trailer. And did I forget to mention, only 10 bucks?
jmc, hell yeah, i still haven't gotten around to watching this with the commentary on. and also the documentary's great as we watch the real "Krug" speak. too bad Last House cursed his acting career into "Psycho-Sadistic-Rapist" typecast stardom.
If Last House hadn't done it, The House on the Edge of the Park surely would.....
This is a great DVD. Get it! It makes me happy.
do you (or does anybody) know exactly what scenes were cut from the movie?
--e
It varies...what happened was that various theater owners would freak out and cut some stuff themselves. I don't think it was a case of a studio making cuts.
One of the people responsible for the DVD wrote a book about the film, you could probably get more solid answers there.
And yeah, Hess is pretty creepy, but I think Fred Lincoln ["Weasel"] looks creepiers today!
Scenes Cut from "Last House..."
* various tortures upon the girls(cigarettes burning their feet, beatings, etc.)
* Phyllis sliced open, and gutted, complete with hanging intestines
* Phyllis' hand gorily hacked off
And,Jmc,I believe that the term for "DVD nerds sites" is officially(the ever-so-overused,but much beloved)known as "fanboy".
Nah, there's fanboy, and then there's "DVD Nerd." The folks jmc are talking about are honest-to-God nerds whining that there aren't enough radio spots and such. Frankly, I'm kind of glad that I didn't have to hear the "It's Only A Movie" bit one more freakin' time!!
According to the author, the only surviving scenes left out of the DVD involved lesbian sex, and due to a lack of model releases, no one will be seeing those. There's another scene where the parents find Mari still alive that the filmmakers wanted out of there. You are seeing everything left to see on the DVD.
It's an excellent DVD, though: probably the best of its kind for the year. More than just an addition to your collection: a real piece of drive-in history.
Yeah...we're all fanboys [and girls] to some extent. It's the "can't see the forest for the trees" mentality that I'm talking about, where people get so concerned about extras and technical specs that you wonder if they even care about watching the movie itself.
I know what you mean jmc. I'm all for some cool extras on a DVD(especially is it's twenty bucks or more) but lets face it. Are you going to care about special features if it's not a movie you will watch?

Another movie where instead of just saying you've seen it, you have to qualify it by which release you've seen and what scenes were included.
Once again, I'd like to suggest the idea of making a single version of a movie and using that for all the various releases. I'm getting really sick of reading about how various companies had to leave out scenes because they didn't have all the rights in order, or the footage was lost after it was hacked out for some other release, or someone thought it would play better if they removed a few lines and a couple scenes.
No it's not. In fact, the only reason the lesbian" scenes came up is because nitpicker DVD nerds were looking to prove that the MGM release wasn't as complete as it could be, even though Wes Craven states that this release is the UNCUT, COMPLETE release. The lesbian scenes would only be "extras" anyhow because they were cut from the film by the director. No one is going to be seeing those because they were never intended to appear in the film. Same with the "Mari is alive" scenes ... Craven even says that in the commentary ... they were not to be in the film.
So your point is not applicable to this title. The Last House MGM DVD is the complete release. Nothing is missing that was meant to be in the film. This IS the single all-inclusive version ... all quibbling is being done about rumored "lost footage."
