Title: Stuart Gordon's Dagon
Post by: J.R. on October 07, 2002, 03:52:38 AM
Who says you need boatloads of cash to make an impressive film? The man behind Re-Animator has done it again. This movie is fantastic! Great makeup and gore and some truly gripping scares. Probably the best part of this is the hero. he's kind of a dork but when things heat up he is a tough survivalist. He makes smart moves (something rare in a horror film) and the actor who portrays him is great. This has to be the best horror film I've seen in years. Definitely see this if you already haven't. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm heading over to Amazon to order the DVD right away!

One of my favourite B-Movies ever. Certainly didn't expect Gordon to make such an effective movie, I guess the man has finally matured. I'm also very proud of it because it was made on my home country, Spain. It was great to see Paco Rabal, former Buñuel actor (he plays Ezequiel, the fisherman who helps the hero) and soap opera starlette Raquel Meroño in a horror film like this one, and the galician landscapes are great.

You won't believe it, but here in Spain the critics went mad when they saw what they had done with all that movie subventions that are given to spanish producers. I would have given my left arm to be at the Premiere, when all those polititians went crazy when they saw where they had invested in.

I bought the DVD and had a hell of a lot of fun with it.  I agree that the main actor does a good job with the role.  The ending rules!

I liked "Dagon" a great deal.  Gary (a friend) had been keeping me up to date on its production ups and downs for some time, so I was anxious to see the result.  One of the more faithful Lovecraft adaptations (The Shadow Over Innsmouth) and one of the best.

Here is a bit from a previous post of mine on the movie:

"Dagon" was interesting and atmospheric. I think my only real complaint was that I wanted the scene in the hotel played off exactly like it had been in the story. It was okay (the hotel siege), but you could take the action exactly as it transpired in the story and drop it right into the movie.

Some might find the squid girl loving Paul and saving him from certain death to be cliché. However, things work out like that in any number of Lovecraft's stories. The luckless person is not immediately killed by the eldritch forces, but kept alive because they want something from the human.

Oh, I also bet that Paul wished he had not jammed the winch. That looked like it hurt. Good scene though, that whole little section.
