Title: Do You Collect These???
Post by: Ash on October 08, 2002, 01:50:24 PM
I have a little hobby that I started in 1997.  I collect movie ticket stubs.  Whenever I tell people that I do this they look at me like I'm crazy!  Like I'm some kind of dork with no life.  I don't think so!  I collect them for several reasons.  For one thing, I can look at the date and time of the movie on them and remember my experience of that particular film like it was yesterday.  I usually can remember with great clarity who I went to see it with and even if I had candy or popcorn and what kind of soda I drank especially if said food was snuck into the theater either in my girlfriend's purse or the inside pocket of my coat.  (I never pay for grub at the theater, the ticket's expensive enough as it is!) They're excellent for bringing back those memories.  Another thing:  how many times do you happen to look at the ground, whether it be outside the theater or maybe at the grocery store while shopping and happen to spot one that someone else discarded?  I admit that I pick them up and stuff them into my pocket even if it's a film I haven't seen yet.  Some of these have partial shoeprints on them from being stepped on by God knows how many people!  I organize mine by the date and year and keep them in a plastic bag to prevent them from exposure.  Another reason I hoard them is because of the potential monetary value they could fetch when I'm an old geezer say in the year 2050 for example.  (I'd be 76 then).  For instance:  can you imagine how much an original Casablanca ticket from 1942 would go for right now!!??  A helluva lot especially if it's unripped!  There will always be some collector somewhere who will want it.  The unripped one's are the true prizes.  I only have 2 unripped ones and they are The Blair Witch Project and The Empire Strikes Back from when it was re-released.  Some of these, depending on what movie it was could potentially bring in a huge sum of money in the future although money is not my main reason for collecting them.  I collect them for the memories.  They always cheer me up when I get them out and look at them!

I don't simply because I rarely bother to see movies in the theater.  Usually only something I *really* want to see and if I think the viewing experience will be significantly improved by the large screen and sound system.  Otherwise, very little is worth the money

I do, my wife keeps the ones we see together/as a family in a keepsake container, while I keep my solo trips (i.e. Ghosts of Mars, Jason X, etc) elsewhere.  Nostalgia stuff, coooool.

I don't collect stubs, but i've always had a knack at remembering the details of any movie viewing experience dating back to as far as 5. I don't need a stub to remind me, because I'd forget where i put the stub but i could remember who i saw 'iceman' with and what i ate. Because my mind works that way, and i don't ask questions.

I kept my ticket stub for Death Becomes Her for a long while.  It was torn in such a way as to just have Death on it.  It seemed cool to have a ticket to Death.

Other times, I'll put the stub in my jacket pocket, and not clean it out for a few years.

I don't collect movie ticket stubs because the vast mojority of films I see are the cinema are s**te.  Those movies I do see that really amaze me I can still remember the whole experience.

I remember at fourteen sneaking past the booth while my brother bought tickets to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells, they only check age at the booth, never the door.

I remember seeing the Matrix on opening night and being amazed that nobody thought it was very good.

I remember seeing Scream 2 (not cos it was a particularly great film, just a funny day at the cinema). We went to the dirtiest skankiest cinema I have ever been to, seen as it was the only one in the area with any chance of it letting a large group of 13 year-olds watch 18 certificate films. The manager was about to throw us all out when I held £45 in front of him and let him meet the money he'd be passing up. His mood soon changed.

I do keep gig tickets though. Every one I've ever had, and even a cuple I didn't make it to.

I collected every single stub for about two years, then my mom threw them all out. Nowadays I could probably start up another set with the lint trap in my dryer. If I did keep tickets they wouldn't have any value (if they ever will) because I play with them during the movies, twiddling them between my fingers and such.

>unripped one's are the true prizes.

Easy enough to get, just buy a ticket and then walk out. It'd almost be worth it just to see the look on the ticket seller's face. :)

I had quite a collection going, then they dissapeared. I had them on my mirror, but then it fell over one day out of the blue and I haven't seen my ticket stubs since(the mirror is in my closet I think.). I will have to start it up again.
