I was watching TV the other day, bored, and I began to channel surf. While
changing the channels, just about every show or movie was at that moment when the bad guy is successful in either killing off the heroes love interest or performing some act that will "end the universe."
So what doe the Hero do?
Yells out, "NNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!"
This is without a doubt the most over used element in drama. Even one of the stupid Nightmare on Elm Street sequels used it as a special "Dream Power." I can't even count the number of times I've seen, (or should I say heard), this yelling of the word "NO."
We had better be glad the negative in our language is a short one syllable word. I
don't think the dramatic effect would be as easy if the opposite of Yes was the word, "negawangalukadasyarticzopocxinato."
"The hero watches as his girlfreind starts the car and it explodes into a ball of flame. "
"NNNEEEGGGAAAWWWAAANNNGGGAAALLLUUUKKKAAADDDAAASSSYYYAAARRRTTTIIICCCZZZOOOPPPOOOCCCXXXIIINNNAAATTTOOO!!!!!!!!"
He Cries
It makes about as much sense as yelling "Stop!" when someone grabs your wallet/bag/etc and takes off running. Has any thief in the history of the world actually stopped, turned around and returned whatever they stole?
I think it serves a purpose. It gives an excuse for slow motion, and it can also add those extra few seconds needed to cross the 90 minute mark. Or those extra few minutes if used frequently enough.
"Oh, we call that achkackhack.... Excuse me, I had a fishbone in my throat, we call that 'Earthquake'."
