Whenever I see a character in a film commit suicide, I am usually totally shocked! (it's what the director wanted all along)
These scenes more than others tend to adhere themselves into my mind.
One memorable scene I can remember is from "Full Metal Jacket" when "Private Pyle", after wasting his drill sergeant and is clearly a "Section 8", puts the barrell of his M-14 into his mouth while sitting on the john and proceeds to blow his brains out all over the porcelain wall behind him.
Another is from "Boogie Nights" when William H. Macy's character "Little Bill" puts a .38 into his mouth after shooting his promiscuous wife and her f**k buddy at that crowded 1980 New Year's Eve party. (If you pay close attention at the end of the movie there is a painted portrait of "Little Bill" in the exact spot where his brains splattered against the wall.)
Are there any other grim suicide scenes that any of you can recall from a movie?
The Virgin Suicides has plenty of them.
I watched "The Virgin Suicides" last year while in Australia.
I only remember that I was a little disappointed in it.
I can't remember any specifics from it.
One that I always thought was effectively done was in The Dead Zone, when Christopher Walken foresees Martin Sheen blowing his brains out at the end. You don't see much, just hear the bang as some blood spatters on a magazine cover documenting the shameful moment that ended his political career. Very effective.
Still, if a president can get a blowjob from an intern and manage to come out of it all right, I suppose using a child as a human shield might not be the career killer it once was.
A movie suicide that was not very good was James Cromwell going out with a bang in Eraser. It was a surprise, and well filmed, but it seemed rather sudden and pointless, as if to give the audience a cheap shock and get Cromwell out of the movie after one scene. I mean, he's caught on tape, making a vague statement that might incriminate him and immediately sticks a gun in his mouth. He's still not 100% sure what's going on. The realization of his predicament can't even have begun to sink in yet, and there are still plenty of possibilities. Everybody else in the scandal came close to getting away with it.
The Castle Rock Killer's suicide in The Dead Zone (with SCISSORS in the MOUTH!!!) gives me the willies everytime.
James Karen's character cremating himself in Return of the Living Dead is a chilling little moment that is both touching, revolting, and funny at the same time. Goosebumps for sure.
The airlock scene in Event Horizon is a jolt, too.
PI.....the guy puts a drill through his head at the end.
The scene that gets me every time is from The Thing when Doc and MacReady find the frozen corpse at the ice station. That always creeps me out, I think it is the frozen blood that does it.
Shop smart. Shop S-Mart
"The Rules Of Attraction" has a very horrifying suicide scene, from what I"ve heard.
It's a movie(from Roger Avary,no less)that we all have to check out.
First, from what I hear, Rules of Attraction was a terrible movie indeed so dont see it.
There are a few suicides that I liked.
In the movie O (based on Othello with Josh Hartnett and Julia Stiles..... Of course) there are two just shocking suicides.
In the Omen, the first nanny conveys a message to Damien before hanging herself and it sends shivers down my sides every times.
Luke Wilson's attempted suicide gave real meaning and plot to the Royal Tannenbaums
Finally, I love Arnold's suicide in Terminator 2, it is so touching and so sweet, I think it is a "nice" suicide if there are nice suicides.
The only ridiculous suicide that I have seen and that made me laugh was Heath Ledger's in Monster's Ball, it was so sudden and out of place, that you just cant help laughing, mucch like the REST OF mONSTER's Ball
Rules of Attraction was a very good movie, but a very shocking one and definitely not for homophobes or very religous people. I can't say I 'enjoyed' it, but I appreciated it and feel that it is worth seeing.
As for the suicide scene, I wouldn't dream of giving it away, but it is fairly graphic and extremely sad. Really added a lot to the movie and was the most obvious instance of a reoccuring theme throughout.

Brock,
How can a movie be good if you can't say you enjoyed it? Just because it makes a positive statement or makes a person think doesn't make it a good movie. I think most people go to the movies to be entertained, and if you don't enjoy it, it's not good.
Just my $.02 but I think your statement contradicts itself.
I disagree....not so much movies, but I think "Lord of the Flies" is an excellent book, but I didn't enjoy reading it at all....same goes for a lot of music I can't stand but can at least recognise the talent that goes into it.
My girlfriend watched the excellent Edward Norton Movie American History X and said it was great, she liked it and never wanted to see it again. Sometimes a movie can be a little too good, but I cant believe Rules Of Attraction is one of them
I'm saying it was depressing as all hell and frequently disturbing, so it wasn't necessarily "enjoyable". But it was still a great movie.
I would have liked AH-X if it were an accurate movie about nazi skinheads.
I dont think AH-X was trying to show just random skinhead story, I think it was a lot deeper, going into society and how racism is passed down in family. In any event it was superbly acted.
AH-X was good, but a little too tame for me. It tried to show the gritty reality of racism and the skinhead subculture and succeded only to a certain point in my opinion.
I like my films to be even grittier. I like 'em as hardcore as it gets. I want to be thinking to myself after it's over, "Damn! That's real life. It doesn't get any worse than that." It seems to me that if the producers really wanted to, they could've gone a lot further with AH-X.
Even though it has "HOLLYWOOD" written all over it I'd still recommend it. Not bad, for what it is.
In "Mission to Mars" -- one of the most boring movies I have ever sat all the way through -- there's a pretty disturbing scene where Tim Robbins deliberately removes his helmet while floating in space. It was disturbing because his head instantly froze and got distorted looking (I don't know how realistic that is but it was creepy). It was also disturbing because of why he did it: his wife was trying to save him before he got sucked into Mars' atmosphere. Her jet pack was almost out of fuel and her harpoon cord couldn't quite reach Tim Robbins. To prevent her from risking her life to save him, he killed himself. What bugged me about it is that with a little ingenuity, she could have reached him and got back because there was a third astronaut with a jet pack who could have helped.
"The dead zone", the killer who is finally cornered in his own bathroom does a pretty bold suicide involving a pair of scissors.
>>Finally, I love Arnold's suicide in Terminator 2, it is so touching and so sweet, I think it is a "nice" suicide if there are nice suicides.<<
I'm fond of the "last of the mohicans" scene myself with the girl jumping off the cliff for love. awww ;-)
deer hunter, although it was not intended as a suicide, but the guy was pretty f'd up in the head.
Rules of Attraction, God that was a peoce of crap. If I were Don Coscarelli, I would get Avary off PHANTASM 5 immediately.
