Post by: michael shea on November 09, 2002, 06:51:33 PM
Having an Ex-wife who is south african I have begun to collect south african cinema.  They for the most part are pretty bad.  I am still looking for more.  In the the process, I have amassed a sizeable collection of low budget horror and action advveenture films.  has anyone ever seen NUKIE????  It is quite possible the worse thing ever shot period.   Any comments???

This one's actually at my local vid store.  I keep seeing it on the shelf, remembering what I've read about it, shuddering, and going on.

Dare I?

Not horror, maybe action adventure, but you  might checkout these South African westerns: "The Hellions" w/ Richard Todd and Lionel Jeffries and "The Jackals" w/ Vincent Price. The last is a remake of the superior "Yellow Sky."
You might also try "The Wilby Conspiracy" w/ Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine. Though, supposedly taking place in South Africa, for obvious reasons, it had to be shot in Kenya. Enjoy!

yeah sure review NUKIE, you have been warned....BTW Silas Odendal was SUPPOSED to be South Africa's next Spielberg heaven forbid.  My ex wife honestly liked it, she thought it was "cute", although she saw it advertised she didnt see it in the theatres

Speedvision once showed a South African action movie called "Vengence Cops" (I think) on "Lost Drive-In".  Found next to nothing on IMDB about it, but dated it to 1988, very wrong. Lots of dull car chases, 60s hairdos and clothes (but I think it was made in the 70s), very empty streets and roads (couldn't afford extras and traffic cars in the background?). Obiviously made during the apartheid era, there was not one black person in the whole film, very strange to watch.

"The Wilby Conspiracy" is actually a pretty good flick with good performances from some great actors: Caine, Poitier, Nicol Williamson. I second the opinion you seek it out. But the tone of the flick is suprisingly comical considering the political subtext of the story and the violent ending.

"From Dusk Til Dawn 3" was shot in South Africa, great scenery and very effective as a setting for a western.
