Title: Movies Games
Post by: BlackAngel on November 16, 2002, 01:58:29 PM
Bought an issue of Playstation Magazine.  In it, it has a list of games (PS only, probably more in general) that are in progress and in discussion.

In Progress:
Deus Ex
Dead or Alive
Max Payne
State of Emergency
Resident Evil 2
Alone in the Dark
Duke Nukem
Nocturne
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Spy Hunter
Area 51
Crimson Skies
Perfect Dark
Alice
Oz
Shadowman

In Discussion:
Metal Gear Solid
Silent Hill
Driver
Half Life
BloodRayne
The Getaway
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Eternal Darkness.

Any questions?  Gripes?  b***hes?  Anything?

I don't get it.  What are we discussing?  Games?  Games based on movies?  Games that are like movies?

I could discuss games until the cows come home.  (Or until my work shift ends.)  Presently I own a Gamecube, GBA, Dreamcast and a PS1.  Plus a PC.

I'm going to assume you meant games that are going to be made into movies, since Perfect Dark and Eternal Darkness (at least) were never and will never be released on the Playstation consoles.

Yeah, what I meant that these games will be or soon will be made into movies.
Sorry I didn't clarify.

With video games' stories, characters, action sequences and music getting more and more movie-like game adaptations may become much more frequent.

One game not listed there is the awesome title Alice, a gothic horror retelling of Alice In Wonderland, which Wes Craven plans to direct.

Half-Life might be good, except I don't think they'd allow audiences to see our hero killing hoardes of Marines. I wonder if Andrew's ever been sent to secret government facilities to cover up interplanetary rifts?

Some games, such as Dead Or Alive or Spy Hunter have simplistic concepts, and we all know what happens with that- Super Mario Bros., and Street Fighter.

>One game not listed there is the awesome title Alice,

It's there, right under Perfect Dark.

>Half-Life might be good

Not very original though. Reminds me of Xtro II, except that Half Life is good.

Thanks for dredging up that reminder of the remainder of Jan-Micheal Vincent's career.

I'm surprised there hasn't been any talk of a movie based on Fall-Out. Done right, it could be a cool, subversively hilarious post-apocalyptic movie. Done wrong (which I suspect would be more likely), it'd be just another Mad Max wannabe.

I can see why a lot of games have been optioned for movies because a lot of them are just like movies. Some I think would seriously rock especially the horror based games (although Resident Evil could have been better. Director please note for sequel : MORE GORE!!!!!!!!! Play the damn game! You'll see what I mean!). Just as long as the creators look at the mistakes in the past- Street Fighter and Mario Brothers. Need I say more. Oh yeah and Double Dragon too. Yikes! That one needs to put out of all our miseries.

DOOM, PERFECT DARK, and a few Squaresoft Games would make good movie but other than that this trend needs to stop. RE sucked because it had crappy looking CGI zombies (#1 sign of a lazy make-up department) and no gore. All VG adaptations besides FINAL FANTASY (and maybe the MK flicks cause they're so cheesy) have been utter crap.

Hehe. There was actually one part of Xtro II that I liked; when they were looking at the structures in the alternate dimension beforet hey sent the soldiers in. I was hoping they'd show them in the alien world, but I guess it wasn't in the budget. Of course if they had, it probably would have spoiled it. I just like the idea of looking into a completely alien world. Too bad so many of them turn out to look so much like our world, just with funny looking people/creatures. Maybe it's just the appeal of seeing somewhere that you know you'll never go (in the context of a movie, that you'll never get to see in more detail). In games I often find it more interesting to see if I can get to any locations that aren't normally supposed to be accessable by the player.

CGI zombies?  What are you talking about?  I can't remember seeing any, though I may have missed it.

I though RE was decent, though disappointing.  Especially in the gore level.  Supposedly it had cuts to avoid NC-17.  WTF is that?  I've seen movies with 100x more violence and gore that are rated R.

And I thought FF was pretty bad for the most part.  To bad really.

I liked the Super Mario Bros movie.  Am I the only one?

How could you have missed them. There was about 2 zombies that weren't painted on the screen in the whole movie. And if you think FF is bad, where do you get off saying MARIO BROS. is good?

I've confessed several times to having a soft spot for the Mario movie. What can I say? It came out when I was 8 years old, and had just gotten a Super Nintendo. Besides, any movie with Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, and Mojo Nixon can't be all bad.
