Here are some of my recent viewing during the week.
WAR OF THE PLANETS (1977) - This Italian Sci Fi movie is the true meaning of B-Movie making. Its a cross between Star Wars, Space 1999, and Dr. Who. Great B dialogue and all the astronauts wear these red felt caps. Menacing computer/robot attempts to take over from another planet. The movie seems to be a "man over machine" type film.
HARRY POTTER (2002) Just seen the latest Harry Potter film. Not bad, but it just seems to be just a patch work of adventures to me. Nothing special except Harry's magical world.
THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957) - Yes, this is a very good film from Sweden with english subtitles. The images and philosophical dialogue are interesting and even comical. A knight returns home from the crusades in the holy land and beats death by playing chess and along the way picks up some friends.
ALEXANDER NEVSKY (1938) - This Russian film directed by Sergei Eisenstein is one of the best surprises for me during my weeks viewings. Just like the box says on the back., this film influenced Lucas, Allen, and Spielberg. You will see were Lucas gets alot of his images for his STAR WARS FILMS. Eisenstein does the job even better than Lucas with the Tutonic Knights playing the storm troopers and the images of the emporer in black cloak are also seen clearly. Also you will see alot of the images from CONAN THE BARBARIAN in this film. I can't say enough about this film. This is a must see for all CONAN THE BARBARIAN and STAR WARS fans. You will be so surprised. This is a remarkable film that will not dissappoint !!!!!
BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1925) After seeing ALEXANDER NEVSKY I had to see another of Eisensteins films. This time it was this silent film made in 1925. This film has the very famous scene of the Odessa stairs and the fall of the baby carriage. Its hard for me to watch a silent film, but the Odessa massacre scene is very noteable.
TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD (1962) - My daughter wanted to see this one after reading the Harper Lee book for school. It was the first time I had the chance to see this classic film. This film packs a powerful and emotional story.
Also viewed this week
MEMENTO: Thought it was a cutting edge type film that might be able to be expanded upon on a bigger scale. The film was neat, but there wasn't enough for me to really like it. I not sure if it was all the flash backs or what but the film was great, but it had a David Lynch feel to it.
Recent viewing also included RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD II. Fun film like the first one.
Memento was excellent!
The story was told backwards!
Highly recommended.
