Title: Great characters in not-so-great movies
Post by: J.R. on November 23, 2002, 05:07:22 AM
Snake Plissken in Escape From New York- One of the few Carpenter films I'm not into, but Snake is just about the coolest antihero ever.

Do you have any favorite characters from less-than-memorable movies?

I thought the basic underlying premise and "villains" in Josie & The p***ycats  were both really WELL thought-out. Stupid movie, yes, but the plot is actually REALLY good.

A few weeks ago, I picked up a copy of "The Vulture," a British horror movie I hadn't heard of before, and watched it with a friend. The movie was unspeakably boring-- I actually nodded off a couple of times-- but there was one character, known only as "The Sexton," who never failed to brighten up a scene. The guy playing him is a wispy, pale, red-headed British guy (imagine a nebbishy Johnny Rotten), and the character seems to serve solely as red herring; he acts INCREDIBLY bizarrely, and, IIRC, his presence is never explained AT ALL. In one scene, the hero is working at his desk, when we see the Sexton's hand inch up to the window and knock on it; the hero looks up, and the hand darts away. This repeats a few times, until the hero finally steps outside to investigate. As soon as he opens the door, the Sexton darts inside. The hero turns around and punches him, whereupon the Sexton laughs and walks out. End of scene. Maybe it's just that the rest of the movie was so dull, but that character provided my friend and I with endless amusement.

Do you have the Snake Plissken action figure? Movie Maniacs series 3.

(BTW, I'm the one who's been posting under the name John, but tonight it tells me that another user registered that name)

How about the Garbage Man in the Video Dead? A guy who's trapped in really bad films foever, why couldn't they have made the film about him?

D beat me to it.  This was the first character that jumped to my mind.

You know, while we are at it -  John Ratzenberger's repairman character in "House II."
