Title: Alexander Nevsky (1938)
Post by: Scott on November 23, 2002, 10:46:20 PM
ALEXANDER NEVSKY (1938) - This Russian film directed by Sergei Eisenstein is one of the best surprises for me during my weeks viewings. Just like the box says on the back., this film influenced Lucas, Allen, and Spielberg. You will see were Lucas gets alot of his images for his STAR WARS FILMS. Eisenstein does the job even better than Lucas with the Tutonic Knights playing the storm troopers and the images of the emporer in black cloak are also seen clearly. Also you will see alot of the images from CONAN THE BARBARIAN in this film. I can't say enough about this film. This is a must see for all CONAN THE BARBARIAN and STAR WARS fans. You will be so surprised. This is a remarkable film that will not dissappoint !!!!!

Not to knock Scott's opinion, who is probably right, but . . . I hated it. One of the worst pieces of s***, I have ever seen. Just full of Russian propaganda. But, watch it, and see for yourself.

Well yes ALEXANDER NEVSKY is full of Russian propaganda just as BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN has. Both are nationalistic films for Russia.

Granted, both are nationalistic films for Communist Russia, but, I found "Battleship Potemkin" at least palpable; whereas, "Alexander Nevsky" made me wretch. Go figure.

I liked the images in Nevsky because they are so close to STAR WARS and CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

I watched this a few weeks ago in a medival Russian History class.  Deifnitely the hightlight of a worthless class like that.  Yeah, its hardcore Soviet propaganda, but its still a brilliant movie.  I can definitely see how Storm Troopers were influenced by the Germans.

Did you notice the Tutonic Knight taking off his double headed snake/horn helmet slowly just like in CONAN THE BARBARIAN. Same looking helmet and motion on film.
