Yet another old (1995) Honk Kong film dubbed into other languages and released to other audiences. I don't blame them, this movie is far, far better than most of the stuff Li has shot in western countries since then (I am still trying to forget "The one"). As many Honk Kong films, it recycles western conventions (here the "Die hard" plot), mixes childish humour with gruesome violence and has some of the most horrid dialogue I've heard in years.
The plot? Ah, well, Li plays the bodyguard of a second rate Jackie Chan wannabe, and he accidentally ends up caught in a building with the mentioned actor, a lot of hostages and a terrorist group lead by his old enemy The Doctor (Jackie Cheung). From then it goes more or less like a "Die hard" clone, except when the mentioned actor appears. Then the tone changes from "Die hard" to "Austin Powers".
Do I recommend it? Sure! Not only is far better than most newer Jet Li stuff, it is also full of horrid dialog, excessive action, plot holes as big as the Manhattan island and some of the most hilarious comic relief scenes I have ever seen.
"Ah, well, Li plays the bodyguard of a second rate Jackie Chan wannabe"
The same person who made this, made City Hunter with Jackie Chan and hated working with Jackie so much that he made this movie to get back at Jackie hence why the character is sort of like him and makes him out to be a total fake
haven't seen it yet but it's on my list, the original title I believe is High Risk
What do you mean, Jet's new stuff int good? Have you seen Kiss of the Dragon? That is the movie that got me into marttial arts. The One was almost groundbreaking by mixing special effects with martial arts, (plus Jet Li plays a better bad guy than good guy). Romeo Must Die is a fun piece of schlock film. The only jackie movies that have impressed me are Shanghai Noon and the Drunken Master. I will admit Jet's the black Mask was pretty bad
Black Mask was incredible. The One sucked
It may be the language, it may be the MPAA, but the truth is that Jet Li movies outside Honk Kong are not as impressive. I enjoyed both "Kiss of dragon" and "Romeo must die" despite its deficiences, but "The one" is horrible. The plot is thin as air when not completely stupid, violence is too mild, and the action is constantly whatered down by the use of FX. If I pay for a Jet Li movie, I want him to do the action, not the CGI team.
