Nick Nolte got 3 years probation and 90 days drug rehab for his notorious DUI.
He pleaded no contest to driving on GHB (I think it is) the date rape drug.
Leno, Conan and countless others have dogged him repeatedly for that particularly nasty pic of him with the frazzled long hair.
I feel sorry for the guy.
He's a prime example of how money can't buy happiness.
The man obviously needs help.
We don't know him personally.
Who are we to judge him?
I imagine he's got a lot on his mind and has probably been down in the dumps and been hitting the bottle and pills pretty hard for awhile now.
The last thing he needs is to be made fun of.
I am a fan of alot of his films he's starred in.
He IS a great actor in my opinion.
He just happened to hit rock bottom, that's all.
I'm sure we've all been there or at least close to there at some time or another in our lives.
I would like nothing more than to see him crawl out of his hole and blow us away with another great performance in an upcoming film!

Even when he was at the top of his game he was a heavy, heavy, oh-my-god-is-that-your-liver-trying-to-escape-out-your-ass alcoholic. I don't think he's ever recovered from that. Even Richard Harris put up a better fight than Nolte ever did. I agree with you that he's probably not a bad person and he has been good as an actor, but eventually some people just give up and there's nothing you can do to save them.
Yes, there but for the grace of go I, WRT the DUI. I hope he takes this as a wakeup call and finally gets sober.
I'd hope that anyone with a substance abuse problem gets help and gets better, great actor or not. Regarding the beating he has taken from the media (in this case late night talk show hosts): it does seem s**tty to dump on the guy to excess, but remember, if we don't laugh at life's tragedies they'll consume us. Thats where Leno and Letterman come in. Additionally, all the millions of dollars Nolte has made have been made thanks to his notariety and presence in the public eye. He who lives by the sword dies by the sword. Not saying it doesn't suck and that decency shouldn't serve to curb the feeding frenzy. I don't watch the late nite shows any more, so I haven't seen the Nolte bashing for myself.
Yeah... don't get me wrong I wish the guy the best and I REALLY hope he can shake this drug problem, but it just seems unlikely.
I don't think he's suffered enough to really kick the habit. The best statement on the insane lure of addiction I heard was to a judge from Robert Downey, Jr. "Sir, you talking to a man who has a shotgun in his mouth and I LIKE the taste of the metal."
It would be nice if Nolte could change, but this seems more like a minor embarrassment than a career ending (or even wounding) disgrace, so I doubt he will change at all, having no real reason to.
Jeffrey Jones and, especially, Paul Reubens on the other hand...serious problems. Jones might comeback, Reubens I think is finished...
I always thought (and I'm not condoning his actions) that maybe his problems helped his performances. He usually played himself, a hard-livin' roughneck who really doesn't give a crap. In every movie there comes a time when he just goes, "Dah, hell..." and seems like he's going to go have a smoke and take a nap.
I like Nolte, both as an actor and as a person. From what I've read from his interviews, he is a nice person. BUT I can't help but notice that while everybody has been attacking Winona Ryder for his shoplifting affair, Nolte's case has passed almost unmentioned. And his case is far more serious. By driving under the influence of alcohol he has risked not only his own life, but also the lives of the other drivers. I'm glad he's out of jail and I hope he can quit alcohol before it's too late, but I'm not going to defend him for this one.
Well Halle Berry actually HIT someone and drove off (hit and run) and they gave her an freakin' oscar!
