Title: GENOCIDE: Ever hear about this strange Japanese sci-fi film?
Post by: Chris K. on December 23, 2002, 05:37:19 PM
During the late 60's, the Japanese film company Shochiku made UCHU DAIKAIJU GIRARA (U.S Title: THE X FROM OUTER SPACE) and the more superior KYUKETSUKI GOKEMIDORO (U.S. Title: BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL).

During that period, Shochiku made the sci-fi film KONCHU DAISENSO, directed by both Kazui Nihonmatsu and Norman Cooper. The plot: a Holocaust survivor breeds insects and uses them to attack Germany and other parts of the world while the Japanese government steps in to stop the attacks.

Said to be released internationally under the two titles GENOCIDE and WAR OF THE INSECTS, the film was barely released in the U.S. despite the fact that the majority of the cast is American caucasions (which would also explain why Norman Cooper was also involved with the direction of the film; Cooper handled the English actors while Kazui Nihonmatsu directed the Japanese actors and the rest of the feature). But, KONCHU DAISENSO's release was quite limited in the U.S. and international areas (the plot I just gave you is also pretty elusive and probably had more to it). And English language print is said to exist, but it has never turned up. Even the Japanese language version has never been released on DVD or VHS in it's own country, at least to my knowledge, and is presumed to be lost even though some publicity photos have shown up.

In anycase, KONCHU DAISENSO is one of those film's that I am dying to see despite the fact that a print has never shown up yet. But, has anybody ever heard of KONCHU DAISENSO? Has anybody ever seen it (on bootleg video, possibly)?

I could possibly get it if I wanted, but I was never to interested in it... never sounded like my cup of tea. Video Daikaiju has it.

Sounds interesting Chris K. Note that I loved those Japenese films they use to show in the 70's on WPIX channel 11 from New York. One of my favorite was WAR OF THE GARGANTUANS. You never see most of them anymore. GODZILLA marathons are common on TV, but the others are never shown and hard to find unless you purchase them somehow.

Does Video Daikaiju have an e-mail address or a website? Because if they still have it available, then I really need to see it.
