Title: Fortune Telling.....
Post by: Ash on January 16, 2003, 01:19:34 PM
I recently learned through my local newspaper and TV news station that the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa where I was born & raised and currently still live in is about to repeal a local ordinance banning fortune telling that has been in existence for 82 YEARS!!!

It made me wonder if there were any movies where either this particular activity was part of the central plot or was used to create a funny scene.

The only one I can think of is from "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure".

"The Alamo.......In the basssement!"  Madame Ruby says as she draws her finger down the fake crystal ball.

LOL!!

Are there any funny scenes you can think of set in a "fortune telling" envoronment?

(p.s.  is fortune telling spelled all as one word or 2 separate ones?...If you type it like this,  "fortunetelling", it doesn't look right.)

Isn't there a scene in Mallrats with a fortune teller?  And I think she is topless with a third nipple, or something like that.  And then at the end of the scene she removes one of the nipples, to reveal it was phony.   I think it was Mallrats.  I haven't seen that movie in forever, and didn't like it to begin with, so I could be wrong.

How about, "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies"?  (Whew!)

What about the crazy old man in Monty Python and the Holy Grail?  And Paquita's Tarot-readin' grandmother in Dead Alive?
By the way, Ash, you live not too far from the Brotherhood of Bad Movies HQ.  We all hail from near Mason City, IA, and myself and Brother Ferox are currently stationed at the institution of higher learning in Waverly.

There's the scene in Wizard of Oz with the traveling patent medicine man. The telling of the future was a big deal in Excalibur and the Dead Zone

Don't forget Dr. Freex (http://www.stomptokyo.com/badmoviereport/) in the intro to "Forever Evil" (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0093041)

Hmm, isnt Final Destination all about looking in to the future????
Arent lots of things foretold in Strar Watrs and the Matrix.
And dont even get me started about all the prophecies that ruined any suspense the Mummy 2 could have had.

Isnt there a movie called the Prophecy?????/

Stephen King's book Thinner (actually it was a Bachman book) has gypsies, who may or may not have also been fortune tellers.

Meridian, a Fullmoon (RIP) flick starring Sherilyn Fenn has a few scenes with a gypsy fortuneteller.

On the tv side, The Simpsons have few fun episodes with fortunetellers.

I can't believe anybody hasn't mentioned the grand old lady of fortune tellers, Maria Ouspenskaya in "The Wolf Man." "Whoever is bitten by a werewolf . . ."
Here are some more fortune tellers I enjoyed, and the films they appeared in . . .
Peter Cushing in "Dr. Terror's House of Horrors," who predicts the fortunes of the five men who are riding in the railroad carriage with him. One of whom is Christopher Lee.
Jane Seymour in "LIve and Let Die." Who, if I remember correctly, could only predict the future correctly, if she remained a virgin.
And Tony Randall in "The Seven Faces of Doctor Lao," who not only portrayed Merlin as a fraudulent fortune-teller in the film, but six other characters as well.
Enjoy them all.
