Title: Cool Names : Just what makes a name
Post by: Flangepart on January 16, 2003, 06:31:24 PM
Just thinkin'....Vin Desiel....is that a cool name, or what...wellllll....
Actualy, it kinda sounds like something ya might hear in a car repair shop in Berlin!
Or maby a game show..."Vin Desiel! Ja,!"
Anyway....heres the question. What is the coolest made up name an actor or character ever had?

And by that,i mean the sound of it , and the image it conjures up.
Darth Vader....that sounds cool on both counts, i think.
John Wayne...sure beats the chaps off of Marion Michael Morrison!

See what i mean? What are some of the lesser known names? I'm sure i've missed some.

Tom Cruise was born as Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.  I think it was a good idea to chop of those last two.

80s rocker Pat Benatar was born Patricia Andrzejewski.  Do you think she would have made the top 40 with that name?

I've already decided that should I ever buff up and decide to become an egotistical action movie star, my new name will be Shiv Remington (patent pending!).

I love the name Allistair  but i cant remember what it is from
I think Elton John is a much better moniker than Reginald Dwight
Babe Ruth is much better than George Herman Ruth
Jet Li and Jackie Chan are both tough
But the best name ever is that of a football player named Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila of the Packers or Chris Fu'umata Mahafala of the Steelers. How cool is that???

I think a kick ass name is Maximus...no one can be a wuss with a name like that. Steve is also a macho name.

Maximus and Magnus are both groovy names.  Harley Stone is a great badass character name.  And of course, what villain has had a more evil name than Kalgan!  Okay, I jest.  Seriously though, who WOULDN'T cower before the might of someone named Megatron.  Especially if that someone could turn into a thirty-foot plasma cannon.

Gojira (or Godzilla) is badass name, running a tight second is King Ghidorah.  Both end with an awe sound, thus inspring awe in all who speak their names.

Master Blaster - if you're gonna be a master, might as well be at blasting.

Jeff Stryker, not that I know who that is.

Duke Nukem.

Snake Plissken.

Paul Naschy.

Joe Bob Briggs.

How about Snake Plissken?
Always liked the sound of Khan Noonien Singh, and he was a very cool character.
Just about any of the classic TV Cops - Columbo, Cannon, Beretta, Kojak, Banacek, Starsky and Hutch, Thomas Magnum. Hannibal Smith isn't bad either.

As for Actors' names, John Saxon is about as cool as they come (eats Carmine Orrico any day). Michael Ironside is another one. It helps that both of these actors are pretty cool as heavies.

In terms of overall improvement, I think Hal Linden made the right choice when he changed his name from Lips**tz.

How about also T. J. Hooker or even Hunter.

These two names are kind of partial to me.

Brick McNabb
Ironhorse.

Hmm..I've been working on a book (it's over 160 pages, so I don't know what else to call it), and the main character is a vampire bounty hunter named...Hunter.  My, how original of me.  I guess that name has always struck me as cool too.  He bears some striking similarities to Blade, but I swear I started writing it before the first Blade film came out, and I'd never had any exposure to the comics.  Ah well, it's just a labor of love and it'll never get published anyway.  Maybe I'll post it in installments on the Brotherhood site one of these days.

Well, I like Torgo (Manos, hands of fate)
And if I were a bigtime movie superstar I would demand to be known as
Hans McThickneck or Trinity Damnation or Jo Thug Snotsalot or Pencil Nevererase
or maybe a "Rap" star, I would be Thick Mac-Daddy Rock Cock.

My wife and I have decided that the ultimate stripper name is Poofy Duvet. We thought of it while making the bed.

I remember watching this cartoon when I was younger.  It was called Sky Surfers (one of the few cartoons that has good animation throughout) and one of the characters has this name I like and is still stuck in my head.

Crazy Stunts.

Dunno, but I think Benatar was from her first husband.  Hmm, maybe she got married so she could change her name without it seeming to be staged?

That just reminded me of Stunt Dawgs, from the early 90s. Not sure what they were thinking when they named the villain Dick Fungus. Mind you, he preferred Richard.
