Title: Man, screw the razzies, here are the academies
Post by: Evan3 on February 11, 2003, 02:06:09 PM
Its that time of year for two "good" movies (The Hours, which I have no interest in seeing, and Chicago, which although is good, is only nominated because people sing in it) will be glorified. Once again, no movie that dares to be inventive (see Catch Me If You Can) is nominated. I havent even heard of half of these people. Ah well. I hate how political these things are.

On the other hand, Michael Caine and Christopher Walken both managed to grab a nomination. I know how many peopleLOVE Michael Caine here too!

Find the nominees at www.oscar.com and tell me which ones are undeserved, deserved, or which movies (like About A Boy, Red Dragon??) were snubbed.

I haven't seen the movies (except the Two Towers) but I'm betting Jack Nicholson will get the nod.

Nicholson will probably win on the strength of his non-Jack acting in About Schmidt.  It was return to real acting and not his Joker/Satan antics (sometime the success of an over the top performance can be a bad thing).

Walken is considered a shoe in for his work in Catch Me if You Can.

Whatever historical costume drama/epic that is nominated with will.

Jackson will not get nominated for directing ANY of the Rings movies, period.  Listen closely.

No. Fantasy. Movie. Director. Gets. An. Oscar. EVER. Period.

Fantasy movies get a nod, seldom a win.  EVER.

I've got so out of touch with regular cinema I've seen none of the films in the the Best Picture/Actor/Actress or Director categories.  In fact  the only two films on the whole thing I've see are 'Bowling for Columbine' and '8 Mile'.  I hope BFC wins the award it's up for, I've not seen the other nominees in the documentary category, but for any of them to win they're gonna have to be good.  And as for '8 Mile', while it wasn't that bad to watch, it definitely dosen't deserve any awards.

I hardly saw any of the big films this year, only The Two Towers and About Schmidt.   I agree Nicholson will probably win, but I'm not sure if he really deserves to...I think so much of that was more about people's reaction to Jack Nicholson acting sedate than the actual performance--that is, if another actor that didn't have a wild-man reputation had given the same performance I doubt people would have been as excited about it.

Any documentaries about the Holocaust this year?

I saw some commercials for a new movie set during the Holocaust, this one directed by Roman Polanski. But what is very discerning about this is the fact that back in 1993 when Schindler's List was going to be made, they approached Polanski and offered the job to him, but he turned it down. His basis for denying the chance to direct was that he thought the movie would hit too close to home, as he lived in a Jewish ghetto for a few months when he was a boy, and the movie would be too personal for him. That I completely understand, but now he's choosing to direct a new movie about the same topic now and that seems a little questionable. Money perhaps? I don't know.

The only ones I've seen are Two Towers and Catch Me If You Can, though I've been itching to see Bowling For Columbine and Adaptation. I hope Walken and Michael Moore win; apart from that, I'm kinda indifferent. At least last year I had David Lynch and Memento to root for, even if I knew both had a snowball's chance in hell.

I hope that Martin Scorsese does not get screwed again at the Oscars. He is the most consistently good director in America, yet he always gets overlooked on Oscar night.

What about Nic Cage's nomination for best actor.  I know we have an anti-Nic Cage fan club here stabbing themselves and convulsing over this news.

Yeah, what about Queen Latifah for best supporting actress nod. Oh baby!

Vermin, at least someone else realize that the Academies consistently pass up great movies like Memento for hackneyed crap like A Beautiful Mind.

As for Scorcese, I have never seen anything but Goodfellas. However, where the hell is Spielburg or his two movies this year??? He has only 1 academy award out of all his movies. That my friends, is a tragedy.

Most of his movies are overrated crap like JAWS and ET so serves him right.

I'm with Creep on the Spielberg thing, but then again everybody already knows that. If Cage get's the best actor award it will be a crime against humanity.

What, are you two crazy. Spielburg is amazing. He has successfully penetrated every genre and been amazing in all of them. He even made up for 1941 with Saving Private Ryan and AI with Minority Report.

I've already explained my position on Speilberg. I shant re-engage the subject.

I don't hate Spielberg as much as some (I'll see his movies if they look interesting), but I do think he's pretty overrated. Just once, I'd like to see him do a movie in 16mm with a low budget and no help from John "Instant Grandiosity" Williams, to see how strong his talents are underneath the budgets.

Yeah. I haven't seen A Beautiful Mind, but despite all the good reviews, I find it hard to believe that Opie is a better director than Robert Altman and David Lynch.

For low budget spielburg watch Duel and Jaws, both were low budget. Plus, Williams only writes music. thats it.

"A Beautiful Mind" is an all-around amazing picture, full of bizarre hallucinations and spooky special effects.  Very much worth seeing by all who frequent this site.
As far as the Academy Awards go, the only thing I care about is Daniel Day Lewis getting a Best Actor nod for his utterly self-less(I mean, there was no "actor" visible, just the character of Bill the Butcher) performance in "Gangs of New York", easily the bloodiest, goriest mainstream movie I've ever seen -- I cannot believe that with the number of gore fans on this site that this movie hasn't been already analysed to death here !!
