Title: The Looooone Ran-ger! And, to make up for it, Ernie Kovacs, The Record Collectis
Post by: Flangepart on February 18, 2003, 07:26:29 PM
I got the latest Teleview from our paper, and it covers a new take on the Lone Ranger. Oh boy......Classic T.V. meets New age Poppycock. The star of this thing looks like Val Kilmer just out of High school. The review says it could be fun....but my spider sence is tingling. Any thoughts on this...thing?
On the up side....Ernie Kovacs, the guy who showed just how imagintive T.V. could be, is one of my comic heros. I got a cd of the music heard on the Ernie Kovacs show, and i wish i could play it for you. Any old farts...ah, Aged Flatulance remember the Kovacs show? If you ever get a chance at the Best of Kovacs collections, go for them....humm...are they on DVD, yet? I hope so.

Man, I love westerns, especially the b-westerns of the 30's and 40's, and TV westerns of the 50's. I would be pretty keen on seeing a new version of the Lone Ranger, as long as it isn't the Disco Lone Ranger from the 80's movie. And, of course they'll put a kid in it, gotta get the all important youth market. Maybe if it's successful, we could get an up date of "Have Gun, Will Travel". It could star Josh Hartnett as a gunslinger who travels the West in search of a good barber, and occasionally defending the defenseless and righting wrongs! Then, if that's a hit, maybe an update of "Wanted: Dead or Alive". It could feature Chris Klein as bounty hunter Josh Randall, whose special weapon is his complete and utter blankness. He bores fugitives into turning themselves in, or jumping off a cliff. The possibilities are limitless!

I saw  a preview for this show last night and I dont know what to say. It looks like the only thing that is the same as the original is the name. There was only one scene I remember with the Ranger in a hot tub. Deej, if you want children, I suggest u buy the Michael Jackson documentary......

Right, that's disturbing. WTF, where did I mention wanting children? Is this about the hug thing? C'mon people, let's pull together, otherwise...the terrorists win!

AM a TV producer by trade.....YES Ernie was GOD in the 50's by my book.   I looked on Rhino a while back. hoping, but nothing there.  My network (America one) used to run em but I dont have any tapes.  Where did you find the music?

THere, Maybe i read to much into that. Maybe, u have caused me undue trauma and I had to lash out. According to the commercials only drugs support terrorists and I dont do drugs.

Tooshea...Try Varese Saraband (Not too sure of the spelling). The Ernie Kovacs Record Collection has all the classic music. The Nirobi Trio, Ernie's theme "Oriental Blues", and lots of good stuff, including that German version of "Mack the knife" he used for the Blackouts.

Ah, Kovacs, the Master! I rented the hell out of the best of collection from a local store. I want them on DVD for myself. I've even got some rough looking clip show/documentary I taped off a local TV station years ago when they still ran late night programming. The show looks and sounds like it's from the early or mid 70s.

Percy Dovetonsils (Hello friends....), Auntie Gruesome, the blackout sketches (the more surreal the better: the chalk drawing cannon was a favorite), and of course the Nairobi Trio.

I remember going to the Smithsonian and the Museum of American History for the first time in DC and being so excited to see an actual Nairobi Trio mask in a display case along with Charlie McCarthy and the Fonz's leather jacket. I know which one meant the most to me, even if I was the only one around who seemed to know who he was.

OT, tooshea, can I e-mail to ask you some questions about America One? A local TV station is an affiliate.

It's funny that someone once thought that Klinton Spilsbury with a dubbed voice would attract people to a new Lone Ranger.  As far as the youth thing goes, it's good to recall that the original TV Lone Ranger  actor was far older than the character he was supposed to be playing.
Ernie Kovacs:  Banging his shoe on the stage while an oscilloscope registered the vibrations at the bottom of the screen.  Sheer insanity.  Wonderful.
