FIST FULL OF DOLLARS (1964) - Just rented this one and found it to be good, much better than A FEW DOLLARS MORE that seems like some kind of out take that they decided didn't fit into the trilogy. I've been watching alot of Clint Eastwood westerns lately, because I have never seen any of them from beginning to end.
This is my all time favorite Western after THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY.
A bit of trivia: FISTFUL is a remake of the samurai film YOJIMBO (1961), which was also later remade as THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS.
..and "Omega Doom" and quite a few others...
Interestingly, I've seen both "Omega Doom" and "The Warrior And The Sorceress" but not the much better movies they copied from. What does that say about me?

It explains why you hang out here, that's for sure!
I've never seen OMEGA DOOM...interesting that its another remake. May have to give it a look (I have a weakness for both Al Pyun and Rutger Hauer).

Then "Omega Doom" is for you! :)
Hated "Omega Doom" beyond any reasonable limit. Boring piece of s**t... If you want to see a good "Yojimbo" remake watch "Last man standing", a 1990's remake starring Bruce Willis and Chris Walken. It's really worth a look.

Ah yes, that's the other one I was thinking of. Thanks.
Hated "Omega Doom" beyond any reasonable limit.
It was directed by Albert Pyun, it had Rutger Hauer....I don't think anyone was defending it as 'good' :)
OMEGA DOOM is available on a 2 flicks on 1 disc DVD with BLIND FURY for $5.88. at Wal-Mart. I've thought about buying it because I kind of liked BF, but even at that price I'd still think I was getting ripped off by the suckiness of OD.
And I'm even odd enough that I actually like the first NEMESIS flick. Does Pyun translate to "pain" in some other language that I'm not aware of.

Compared to it's sequels...the first one was not too bad (hey..it had Tim Thomerson and Bryon James!)
There is an old Dashiell Hammett Novel from the late 20's called Red Harvest. I'm not sure if Yojimbo(and therefore all the others) is loosely based on this book, but the plot is very similar. And, like Last Man Standing, It takes place in a small city during prohibition, with one lone gun nut setting two rival gangs against each other. It's a pretty good read, check it out.
Kurosawa, the japanese director of "Yojimbo" was known to make covert adaptations of western literature (some of his historical films may be Shakespeare adaptations from what I've heard), so it is a possibility. About "Last man standing", several reviewers pointed out that the idea of making it like Red Harvest may have been Walter Hill's idea. Who knows, I've read the novel and certainly there are many similarities.
Yes, to what Neville said.. Kurosawa's "Throne of Blood" is the Japanese version of Shakespeare's "Macbeth," and Kurosawa's "Ran" is the Japanese version of Shakespeare's "King Lear." It might also be said that Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" inspried George Lucas' "Star Wars." Enjoy all the films.
Should have read this before I posted in the remake thread. But seriously, you think 'Last Man Standing' was good? I thought that one was awful. But each to their own opinions, thats why we're here.

Given what I tend to watch, I really never classify movies as "good" or "bad" anymore, but simply "I enjoyed the experience of watching it" or "I did not..."
Fearless has a good point. A film either entertains you at some level or it dosn't. Its very good to have very broad interest in all subjects. Sometimes you have to link different interest to get something out of something.
For Example:
I might check out LAST MAN STANDING based on the info on this post. I don't usually like ganster films nor Bruce Willis films. Especially mafia stuff. That is probably why I waited so long to see THE GODFATHER. Brando expressed the mafia once as form of corparation rather than focusing on the ethnic character thing. It made it watchable and likeable for me also being a fan of Marlon Brando. Another mafia film I liked was , ON THE WATERFRONT, DONNIE BRASKO and of coarse SCARFACE. Al Pacino is a good actor. Now that reminds me of DOG DAY AFTERNOON. One film can take me to another and it might help me notice something about a film that I might not have noticed or been interested in before.
Then again some films are totally un-redeemable. :) Then again your mood can also play a role in your opinion. You might not be in the mood to watch a drama or some other genre when you get a glimpse of it.
When I use the word good in reference to a film. It means that I liked it and can never mean that it is "good" for all.
I remember the first time I watched Last Man Standing. All I could remember was a scene where he shot a guy, turned around, shot three other people, then turned back to the guy he shot the first time. Throughout this whole time the guy was sailing through the air. All I remember saying was "Whoa those are some powerful guns." Then again I was younger then and may have over estimated how the scene looked. Haven't seen the moviwe since then but I'll have to get it again just because it was fun to watch.
Also check out Once Upon a Time in the West. Bit hard to find, but it's unbelievable. One of the best scores ever. If you don't believe me, search for Harmonica's Theme on your favorite MP3 downloading service. Haunting and beautiful, and even more powerful in the movies slightly different version.
Thanks for the insight into another western Jim H. I've seen this one on the shelve at Blockbuster and will rent Once Upon A Time In the West.
Has anyone seen WILD BILL? Is it any good?
Wow, your blockbuster has Once upon a time in the west? i've never seen the video of it ANYWHERE. You have a most unusual blockbuster - consider yourself lucky. Sad to, as it is in the same league as The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.
Wild Bill from what I've heard (I saw a few moments but not enough to judge) is pretty good, but not great. The lead is supposed to be perfectly cast though.
"Will Bill"? I guess you ask about the 1990s film by Walter Hill starring Jeff Bridges. It is really worth a look, but don't expect the usual western epic, it's more like a serious analysis of the man and the myth, and at some stages looks quite experimental. Jeff Bridges is great on it, but the one who really steals the show is Ellen Barkin as Calamity Jane.
Jim H. maybe I have the title wrong. Maybe it was HOW THE WEST WAS WON, but I hope its ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. I'll know soon.
