Well, just viewed HANG 'EM HIGH. Good Clint Eastwood western film from 1968. I have actually seen most of this film not that I remember the jail wagon, the hanging of Eastwood, and the other hangings. This completes my Eastwood viewings which I did enjoy. Could a John Wayne marathon be far behind? That might be a rough ride even for me, but I might attempt it.
Anyone like 100 RIFLES? Its been on TV lately and I see a copy of it on the Hollywood video shelve. I might sit through this one from beginning to end. The parts that I have seen look good.
I've never been able to finish 100 Rifles. No particular reason, I'm just not that strong. Now, a John Wayne-fest, absolutely no problem!! May I suggest:
The Big Trail
Stagecoach
The Spoilers(badass fistfight)
Tall in the Saddle
Angel and the Badman
Ft. Apache
Red River
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Sands of Iwo Jima(JW/USMC!!)
Rio Grande
The Quiet Man(badass fistfight)
Hondo
The Searchers(his BEST)
Rio Bravo
The Man who shot Liberty Valance
McLintock!(badass fistfight)
Donavan's Reef(badass fistfight)
True Grit
The Shootist(his last)
and for pure badness, all of his 30's b-westerns, The Conqueror(1956?) in which he plays Genghis Khan, and The Green Berets (flippin' awful). Good luck my friend, you embark on a noble quest.
I've seen many on the ones you have mentioned like:
The Searchers
True Grit
Sands of Iwo Jima
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Quiet Man
Ft. Apache(When very young)
I think I have seen parts of most of them. Many of these titles I've seen on the rental shelves:
Angel and the Badman
Rio Bravo
Rio Grande
McLintock
Hondo
Red River
Stagecoach
Recently I have also seen:
Big Jake
I saw "Hang "Em High," when it first came out in the theaters. Not my favorite Eastwood film nor my favorite western, but it has a cast that thas to be seen to be believed. Besides Eastwood, it stars Inger Stevens, Ed Begley, Pat Hingle, Ben Johnson, Bruce Dern, Dennis Hopper, L. Q. Jones, James MacArthur, Ned Romero, Mark Lenard, and Alan Hale, Jr.
It also has the best scene of a hanging execution, I have ever seen. And that includes "The Ox Bow Incident," which is saying something.
Yea, seeing the "The Skipper" Alan Hale Jr. from Gulligans Island in HANG EM HIGH was alittle distracting and Dennis Hopper was a pleasant surprise as well.
Alan Hale, Jr. may be best known for playing the Skipper on "Gilligan's Island," but, before he was the Skipper, he was in alot of westerns. Among which are "Springfield Rifle," "The Law vs. Billy the Kid," "The True Story of Jesse James," "Advance to the Rear," and "Bullet for a Badman." And before there was a Robert Redford, Alan Hale, Jr. was the Sundance Kid in "The Three Outlaws."
Enjoy all the films.
Wow, I haven't even heard of those Westerns. Maybe Encore Action channel will play them someday. I have heard that Alan Hale Jr. was a very nice person in real life.
I suggest a John Wayne marathon.
I recently purchased a bunch of John Wayne DVDs including:
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE
RIO BRAVO
THE SEARCHERS
TRUE GRIT
THE COWBOYS
THE SHOOTIST
EL DORADO
THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER
They have provided me with hours and hours of enjoyment.
Boyscoutkevin...."Advance to the rear" A western comedy about the U.S. Cavalry, if i recall correctly, i even remember the tune to the theme song. Wasen't the plot basicly what became "F Troop"?
Wasn't this one his first US western after the success of "A fistful of dollars"? Not my favourite Eastwood at all, full of exagerated music and zooms for my particular taste. Ted Post was a mediocre director, as his further films prove: he also made the weakest Dirty Harry movie ("Magnum Force") and quite a bunch of godawful B-Movies (including "The Human Shield", starring Michael Dudikoff). "Joe Kidd" is a hell better.
Flangepart, you are correct about the plot ofr "Advance to the Rear." And, now that I think about it, I--too--may have heard that the film was what inspired the television series "F Troop." Enjoy!
