I just viewed One Hour Photo. Great movie!
On the whole "Birth of a Nation" thing: If you have a choice of more than one version, get the longer one. This thing has been cut and recut to death. The original that David Wark Griffith produced was about 140min. long. I don't think you can get the whole thing these days. Get one that has at least 120min. running time showing on the box.

Ballistic is very, very cheesy. So, it's appropriate for this board. I saw The Four Feathers yesterday(the new one) and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Did this film even get a theatrical release? Captains Courageous is a good one.
I also saw One Hour Photo the other day.
I'm amazed at how convincing Robin Williams was in that role of Sy the photo guy.
He was truly disturbing.
But, in my opinion, in that film, even though he was messed up in the head. I feel that he did a good thing by doing what he did in the end.
He just took it a little further than the average joe would.

Birth of a Nationc - watched it in film school - everyone should see it at least once (although, it is extremely racist)
Captain Courageous - haven't seen it
Kagemusha - haven't seen it, but have always wanted to
Yojimbo - ditto (LAST MAN STANDING is a remake - I'm sure Yojimbo is MUCH better)
Vamp - Wouldn't watch this even if you pulled out all my fingernails
The Four Feathers - I saw the original, which was very good - I haven't heard many good things about the remake
One Hour Photo - I need to see this one as well
Monsters Ball - Highly recommended
Yeah, One Hour Photo is decent, nothing more nothing less.
I strongly caution you against Monster's Ball. It is pure dreck and very laughable. I view it more as a comedy than anything else. All Halle Berry did was cry in this movie. I hate to say it, but I think her academy was more politics than true talent..

No Evan3 I haven't seen QUILLS yet. I forgot about that one. I want to see it though.
Which one? There have been six big screen versions of "The Four Feathers." I have seen the first sound version, which I found supeiror to the latest one. There was also a made-for-television version, which I also found superior to the latest one.
Actually, it could be said that "Last Man Standing" is a remake of "A Fist Full of Dollars" with a "Fist Full of Dollars" being a remake of "Yojimbo." But, enjoy all your fiilms, Scott.
Yea, it was THE FOUR FEATHERS. I like those British or French army desert films. Still want to see the BEAU GESTE again that stars Telly Savalas.
I mean it was the new one. I'll check out the older versions as I have seen one on the rental shelve at Hollywood Video.
The version of "Beau Geste" with Telly Savalas iis memorable. Other people appearing in it are Guy Stockwell and Doug McClure as the Geste Brothers and Leslie Nielsen, Leo Gordon, Michael Constantine, Malachi Throne, Joe De Santis, and X Brands.
Charlton Heston was offered the role played by Telly Savalas, but turned it down.
Of course, if one is familiar with the original novel, one knows that this version does not follow the book too closely. A version that follows the book mpre closely is the one with Brian Donlevy playing the sergeant, here called Markoff; Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, and Robert Preston as the Geste Brothers; and Susan Hawyard, J. Carrol Naish, Albert Dekker, Broderick Crawford, and Donald O'Connor as the young Beau.
Donlevy really got into his role as they tyrrannical sergeant, so much so, that when it came time for Milland to stab him to death with the bayonet, Milland, who has been in the British Army and was an expert with the bayonet, deliberately stabbed Donlevy, where Donlevy wasn't wearing any padding. And when big, tough Donlevy saw that he was bleeding, he fainted dead away.
There is also a silent version of "Beau Geste," which looks interesting, but, which I haven't seen.
There is also a comedic version of the story called "The Last Remake of Beau Geste." It's not that funny, (IMHO), but the cast is interesting, as it includes Marty Feldman and Michael York, as the Geste Brothers and Ann-Margaret, Peter Ustinov,, James Earl Jones, Trevor Howard, Henry Gibson, Terry-Thomas, Roy Kinnear, Spike Milligan, Avery Schreiber, Hugh Griffith, and Sinead Cusack.
And, if one is interested in a film similiar to "Beau Geste," then check out an early John Ford talkie called "The Lost Patrol,," in which Victor McLaglen leads a British Army patrol into the desert, only to be picked off one by one by the hidden Arabs. One of the patrol members is Boris Karloff, who plays a religious fanatic in the film.

I'll look into LOST PATROL. My most memorable parts of BEAU GESTE are the burial up to the head, the blind folded walk toward the cliff, and of coarse the proping up of the soldiers along the wall at the end. I have never seen this one on DVD nor VHS anywhere.
