Title: Movies that seem to have disappeared from sight
Post by: The Burgomaster on February 28, 2003, 06:03:54 PM
Here are some movies that seem to have vanished. They're even tough to find on late-night TV. Some of them were available on video at one time or another . . . others may never have been available. Some are good. Others are not. Anyway, I'd like to see them get released on DVD sometime soon (although, I'm pretty sure that some of them are available from sources outside the U.S.):

* TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING (with Burt Lancaster)

* THE DOMINO PRINCIPLE (with Gene Hackman)

* THE BROOD (with Oliver Reed)

* PUPPET ON A CHAIN

* THE OTHER (not to be confused with Nicole Kidman's THE OTHERS)

* ARNOLD

* THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD

* POCKET MONEY (with Paul Newman and Lee Marvin)

* PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID (I had Peckinpah's director's cut on VHS, but I sold it on Ebay)

* THUNDER AND LIGHTNING (a dreadful David Carradine/Kate Jackson car chase movie from the 1970s)

* DIXIE DYNAMITE (another good old boy . . . er . . . gal . . . movie from the 70s)

* THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE

* THE OMEGA MAN

What others have I forgotten? (As you can see, I'm a 1970s fan).

POCKET MONEY, THE OMEGA MAN, and THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE were all getting played quite often on AMC until they decided to retool themselves.

I got my copy of POCKET MONEY on VHS at Wal-Mart along with lots of other cool flicks for about $5 about two years ago during one of those tape sell-offs. A very underappreciated fun film.

TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING seems to be a victim of the end of the Cold War. People have lost interest in stories and films whose drama hangs on Cold War tensions, especially ones with a kind of political bent like this one. I will say that this flick has my favorite use of splitscreen during the missile launch. Fills me with tension every time I see it.

David Cronenberg mentioned that someone is thinking about remanking THE BROOD. maybe the original would get a DVD release then.

I remember "The Other" got a lot of play on AMC as well. You know..."before."

I'd love to see "Twilight's Last Gleaming" someday...but I guess it's eBay or nothin'. Even Movies Unlimited doesn't have it.

A remake of "The Brood?" Well...as long as they get rid of the jammies. Monsters and jammies don't mix. Especially if they're jammies with feet. "The Brood" seems to be another eBay-only video, unless you order from the UK... (Wow--I just took a peek at Cronenberg's IMDB listing--a drag-racing movie? Yoiks.)

Is this (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0069732) the "Arnold" you're talking about, Burg? That actually looks like sick fun.

NIGHT GAMES. I've never seen the movie but it's directed by Roger Vadim (Barbarella) and the music is by John Barry. And the story looks weird. I think it's lost forever.

Also, there's LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE. A really bad movie. It was never released on video or DVD. It pops up on TV from time to time, but the fact that it was never available for home market sorta tells you how bad (but in a good way) LYLAH CLARE is.

I catch the Omega Man quite often enough - usually on AMC or TCM

I've been told by many people that ARNOLD shows up quite frequently on some cable and satellite channels (don't recall the names, though). The video is always turning up on Ebay, and I've been checking around to find out where the video rights to ARNOLD are, as I would love to get a campaign going for a remastered collector's DVD release.

I also run a complete website devoted to the movie, with exclusive images and interviews:

A lot of those films turn up on the Encore Mystery, Western, and Action channels quite a bit.  And THE BROOD got a lot of cable play last October on IFC.

Just to add one more...  "Point Blank" with Lee Marvin.  This can be seen on TCM on occasion, but I have never found it on a *new* VHS (Less than 20yrs old or less that $30 on ebay).  It WAS released on Laser Disc, if I recall, but I haven't seen it on DVD.  I really, really like this movie.

Oh yeah, and "Night of the Lepus," but we've been over that already.

"Arnold" pops up on cable now and again.  "The Other" and "The Brood" used to be out on video.  I've tried to watch "The Other" several times, even in a theater once, and could never get into it, even though I've always heard nothing but good things about it.  Not my cup of tea I guess...
Director Nicholas Ray seems to have several films that have never been out on video, never show up on tv and rarely seem play revivials, if at all.  In particular I'm thinking about "Larger than Life" with James Mason and "Bitter Victory" with, I think, Richard Burton.
