Title: Just picked up the following.. any thoughts?
Post by: Dolph Lundgren on March 05, 2003, 02:44:25 AM
Hey guys, I just cleaned out a nearby video store that had the following titles for 4 dollars and under.  If you bought two, then you got the third free, no matter how many movies that you bought.  So I went ahead and snagged the following.  Many of these were purchased blind, by the way.  How'd I do?  I just wanna know what I'm getting myself into here for the next couple of weeks:

Hitman Hart, Wrestling with Shadows:  Not a bad movie, but an interesting documentary on a year of the life of Bret Hart before the "incident".

They Call Me Bruce?:  Looked pretty interesting, and it was 99 cents, so I snagged it.  Old-ass video case and all.

Survival Quest:  Supposedly a Most Dangerous Game takeoff, but I got it 'cuz I saw Lance Henriksen was in it.  Hopefully that was a wise move.  The movie looks interesting, at least.

P.O.W. the Escape:  A crappy-looking knockoff of Missing in Action starring David Carradine, and made by Cannon/Golan and Globus?  I'm there!  This one could be painful though..

Best of the Best 2:  I remember loving the original, so hopefully the second one stands up pretty well.

The Blood of Heroes:  Looked like some Mad Max ripoff with Rutger Hauer's mug on the cover.  That's enough to pique anyone's inerest right there.

Rapid Fire:  Starring Brandon Lee.  I'm sure it's the run-of-the-mill action film, but hopefully something will stand out.

American Yakuza:  Pre-LotR Viggo Mortensen.  I had recalled hearing good things about this one, so my hopes are pretty high.

Hong Kong '97:  Yeah, this one looks like it might suck the most.  I don't know why I got it; probably because it was another 99 cent title and it had T-1000 on the cover.  Funny thing is, I just realized who the director is.  None other than Albert Pyun, a director who strikes fear in the hearts of nearly everyone.  Things might not be looking too good with this one.  Hopefully I'm wrong.

Enter the Ninja:  I have seen Revenge of the Ninja and Pray for Death, but not this one.  Supposedly Sho Kosugi is a bad guy in this.  Plus, it's in one of those mega video cases.  Should be interesting, at least I hope it is.

McBain!:  Just finished watching this one first.  Another 99 cent title.  Walken's mug on the cover.  I thought it would be gold, and boy was I right.  This movie was a godsend.  Everything that encompasses a bad movie rolled all into one craptastic package.  Thank you Mr. Walken.

The Perfect Weapon:  Jeff Speakman's first starring role.  This one simply looked pretty cool, although it looks like every other crappy action movie of the time.  Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I also managed to snag Revenge of the Ninja, which I already know is great.  13 flicks, 4 for free.  All for nearly 40 bucks after tax.  So what do you guys think, am I gonna be disappointed, or did I do pretty well?

I saw They Call me Bruce when I was a kid, thought it was pretty damned hilarious. Although I haven't seen it sice I was about 9 or 10.

I think I saw Hong Kong '97 when I was stationed in Okinawa, I was really, really drunk, so the only thing I remember about the movie is the cover art.

Enter The Ninja was the first ninja movie I ever saw, it pretty much kicked off the whole ninja craze of the 80's. I was probably 8 or 9 when I saw it and I liked it at the time, but viewing again some years later, I found it pretty slow. Also, Franco Nero kinda reminds me of a Village Person.

Revenge of The Ninja KICKS SERIOUS ASS. I still love this frickin' movie. My friend and I used to play Revenge of the Ninja when we were kids, I never got to be Sho Kosugi...I'm still p**sed

Rapid Fire is run of the mill, but not bad. It's cool to watch Brandon Lee, before he got the Crow role and tried to turn all artsy-angst ridden early 90's on us. And, for some reason, I've always liked Powers Boothe.

HITMAN HART: WRESTLING WITH SHADOWS is a great Documentary on the famous real life double cross between Vince McMahon and Bret Hart. I'd like to have a copy of that one.

THEY CALL ME BRUCE: Always wanted to see that comedy.

The Bret Hart doc. is good, I think I saw it on A and E.  I think that is really a gem that you found there.  I haven't seen any of the other movies, so i can't say anything about them.

P.O.W. the Escape - Terrible, but watchable.

The Perfect Weapon: Better than you might expect. But you are right, it IS like a lot of other actions movies of the time.

>The Blood of Heroes

Supposedly, there's a better cut of this movie under the original title, Night of the Jugger. The whole movie is about a violent futuristic sport played with clubs, nets, bones and stones. Rutger and his team travel around and compete in various tournaments to earn their shot at the championship.

>Rapid Fire

Typical low budget action movie, but I kind of like it. Police think Brandon's a killer, then they realize he's innocent and pressure him into helping them nail the bad guys.

>Hong Kong '97

Saw this one one of the pay channels a couple times and all I remember about it is that it had some good nudity by an extra in a couple scenes.

>Enter the Ninja

Saw this a LONG time ago. I liked it, although even at the time I thought it was a little silly in spots. Bad guy is pushing around couple, couple's friend is an expert in the martial arts and pushes back, bad guy hires ninja to push even harder, people die, guy and ninja have a showdown. My favorite part is probably the bad guy realizing that he's in danger and yelling "I WANT MY NINJA AND I WANT HIM NOW!"
