Well, I just seen SANTA SANGRE directed by Aleandro Jodorowsky. This film fits the catagory of weird, strange, and bizarre without a doubt. It's a Italian-Mexican production with very vivid images all throughout the film. Some of them will stay with you for a lifetime I'm sure. There is just to much to about this film to put into words. If you watch it you will be shocked. Yes, even Bad Movie fans that haven't already seen it will be surprised. Many disturbing scenes yet there is something non-harsh, almost tender that might seem odd for a movie with so many bizarre scenes.
Now I have to find EL TOPO by the same director. I've been reading a little about this film.
EL TOPO's even crazier! SANTA SANGRE has more of a linear plot, probably the most of any of his movies.
I have to say that tihs was one of the few movies I ever didn't make it all the way through. I like strange and bizarre, but I got to a point with this one where I just couldn't watch it anymore. It wasn't too gross or too difficult to follow or too disturbing it was just uniquely unbearable for me. I wondered "What's the point?" I wondered "why hasn't this guy been caught already, again." "What the f**k sort of idiot thinks he can make an invisibility potion by mimicking a movie?" "Iv'e never seen a knife quite go through a persons arm so easily before" Eventually between the sub-par production values, the incontinuities and the Impossible key plot points I gave up.
The parts that were strange and bizarre would be. The destruction of the temple of the armless woman. Another would be from the point of the knife thrower being caught with the tatoo women to the suicide of the knife thrower, and there was the night on the town. Other than that this film would not have shocked to much. I liked the vividness of things, like the bird of prey at the beginning flying through the streets.
Parts that I didn't like were the death of the elephant and the main character just didn't interest me. You have to admit that this film is way out there.
