Title: CABIN BOY
Post by: jmc on March 17, 2003, 08:36:50 PM
Check your Wal-Marts---I picked up the DVD of this for $6.  They have a ton of other promising low priced DVDs too.

CABIN BOY is probably one of my favorite guilty pleasure comedies.  I don't think it's really a bad film, but when I watch it I wonder who the intended audience was.   Anyone else have any thoughts?

oh

please....

no.......................

I saw this at my friends cottage and didn't get too far into it. HATED it. Not funny at ALL. Every now and then we make jokes about finishing the movie, but never EVER think about it.

haha.

I loved it and saw it in the theatre!!!  Kool Keith has a song about it buried way after the end of the album (track two hundred or smething) on I think his 1st album.  Fancy Lads, charky.  You can't miss!

Hey, your handles doesn't stand for Jupiter Mining Corp. does it?  Just curious.
I picked up Cabin Boy in the Wal-Mart $5 bin as well.  I love that movie.  It's weird, it's silly, and by god it doesn't apologize for it.  I also saw Clash of the Titans, Bats, and a couple of old Hong Kong Jackie Chan flicks in there.  Any other good stuff where you're at?

I saw a Dolph Lundgren flick there, can't remember which one....also one of the Ernest movies, and something called CARNIVORE.  I love it, they have a big shopping cart with a ton of DVDs inside of it and a sign that says "5.95."  But then you go through it and realize there are only maybe about five or six different titles.

My favorite character is "Pops" or whatever his name is.....and also Andy Richter as Kenny the dimwit.

Yea, I have only had the chance to see CABIN BOY once and loved it. A unique comedy. That 8 armed mermaid was quite mesmerizing.

I remember Chris Elliot as the guy under the stairs on David Letterman. Letterman does a cameo in CABIN BOY as well.  You picked up a good deal jmc.

Chris Elliot is, of course, the son of Ray Elliot, who played his father in "Cabin Boy", who is the "Ray" of "Bob & Ray".
If you don't know who "Bob & Ray" are, then go hit the "explore" button on your search engine.
This was a brilliant bit of satirical comedy.  Of course, since noone reads these days, it was lost.  I think that in order to be funny, this picture needs to be taken within the context of Western Literature, specifically Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast".
Good stuff . . . .

BTW, there was also a phony Mommie Dearest-type "tell all" book written by Chris Elliott called DADDY'S BOY that's pretty funny too if you can find it.

Ray was also Chris' father on Get a Life, a awesome show.

Holy crap what an oddity(that goes fro the movie and Chris Elliot). :)
this movi is completely stupid but it cracks me up.
But this movie did teach me a few things:
Stay out of Hell's Bucket
Don't be on the same boat as Chris Elliot
If you come across a halfman/halfshark pray for death

His father's name is Bob Elliot not Ray Elliot.

I love that movie!!

"My christening wig!  I've had it since infancy!"

"Well you don't got it no more peckerhead!!"

Cabin Boy is a classic

The funny thing is that I haven't seen that film in over 2 years but I remember those lines from it!

LOL!

Absolutely love it. Always near the top of my favorite comedy list. Just let Chris Elliot loose on anything, and those of us who get it are rolling on the floor.
