Title: Godzilla fans.. question about DVD's.
Post by: Dolph Lundgren on March 26, 2003, 07:06:34 PM
Hey all you Godzilla fans out there, I need your help with a quick question.  I have a lot of the old Godzilla DVD's before they went out of print, and I also have G2K as well on Region 1 DVD.  The thing is, I believe there was a couple of other Godzilla movies put out after Godzilla 2000 over in Japan, am I right?  Well, my question is, will these movies ever make it over here on DVD?  Are there DVD's of these movies out there that are Region 0 or 1?  I really don't want to get an all-region player, but if that's the only way to get these new Godzilla movies, I just might have to look into it.  Anyone know?

There were three other Godzilla movies after Godzilla 2000.  (check  here   (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0255198),  here  (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0279112), and  here  (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0314111) for more)

As far as I know, there are no plans of bring them out in the US anytime soon.

There is a new remake of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla currently playing in Japan, and it should be available on bootleg sometime this spring.  As for the other two that came after G2K,  Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora: Daikaiju Sokugeki (I think I spelled that right), you can get them on DVD or VHS from www.fareastflix.com.  The guy does an excellent job with the transfers, and even does his own subtitles!  There are also a few extras, like making-of things and trailers, although they're all in Japanese.

Thanks for all of the information, guys.  Very much appreciated.  Brother Ragnarok, are these new Godzilla DVD's Region 0 or 1?  I'll be sure to check out fareastflix.com, thanks again for the heads-up.

By the way, I've heard that Gamera was just released on DVD here in the states.  That's great to hear, although I've never seen Gamera before.  Are these the new films?  And if so, are they any good?  That might seem like a foolish question, but I'm genuinely curious to hear what you guys think of them.  Yeah, I've read some other reviews, but it's always good to hear what other people think too.  Any opinions?

The Godzillas from fareastflix are burned bootleg DVD-R's, but they're excellent quality.  Just make sure your DVD player can support the DVD-R format.  They have a link on their site that takes you to a comprehensive format-checking page that lists every DVD player made and what it can support.  Make sure to double check that list, because they don't refund for customer goofs.  They are, however, very good about replacing defective discs.

As for the Gamera flicks, they are the three new ones directed by Shusuke Kaneko (who also directed GMK: Daikaiju Sokugeki, the newest available Godzilla).  The first one is pretty good, but it's not excellent.   *shameless plug* read my review at The Brotherhood of Bad Movies -  bbm.monoperative.net/reviews/gameraguardian.html (yes, I have this ridiculous screen name for a reason).  The second one rules, and the third one is probably one of if not the best kaiju flick ever made.  It will blow your damn pants off.

I haven't seen the last two in the series, but the first of the New Gameras ( Gamera: Guardian of the Universe ) beats most of the new Godzillas in terms of story and FX.  At least, that's what I think.  Other opinions may vary.

Brother R, just visited your site. Man, the Douglas Adams article was outstanding. Even though I ain't got no college learnin' I can empathize with the Memoirs of a College Freshman as well. Just substitute a barracks for a dorm, and add knuckleheads calling you "devil dog" everytime you walk through the door, and you pretty much get the same idea.

Hey, Cullen's back!

My personal set-up: PlayStation2 takes care of the Region 1 stuff, the PC handles Region 2. Region 2, by the way, handles Europe, so I can play "Wallace & Gromit's Cracking Contraptions," the German "Last Unicorn" DVD (with English soundtrack), and "Futurama" as well as my kaiju flicks! (Sources: amazon.co.uk, amazon.co.de, amazon.co.jp. Of course, "Futurama" is coming to video in the US now, but by the time they get to Season Two, Europe may very well be on Season Four.)

On Topic â€" Gamera

Just thought I’d stick my head out of my shell to mention that my comments on Gamera: Guardian of the Universe are based on the video tape, not the DVD.  The Japanese version might be better, or it might be worse.  (I put my money on better, however that isn’t always the case.)

Back again, with a new plan: not to make a total doofus out of myself.  This goal should last me a full month before I blow it.  With any luck, it won't involve a scene of me spontaneously combusting, shot and viewed from three different angles (ie: all of those terrible action flicks of the early eighties).

Or bullet time.

That would suck.
