Title: Minority Report - Major Letdown
Post by: Dr. X, Yyz, Sr. . on March 28, 2003, 04:03:23 PM
I watched this ridiculous claptrap this morning and, after the first hour,  was amazed that  I even started watching it in the first place. The plot was so commonplace that it eventually put me to sleep. The only thing that woke me was that I had begun  to drown in my own drool. THEN, when I realized the movie was still on my brain went all whacky and I suffered a severe aneurism resulting in MORE drool.

oh Steve Speilburg, why do you insult me so.

No offense Dr. but yoyr posts always seem to infuriate me. I dont know why our tastes are always so different. I guess I just recognize goodness as I see it.

Without the title, this could be about any movie.  Heck, there's nothing that even indicates you actually saw the movie.

How about a little bit of thought in telling us why you disliked the movie so much.

"No ends to his intelligence" ---???? I assume you're refering to Stealburg.
The only movie he's made that's worth anything was AI.
The rest is simply garbage.
No offense Evan
But on the subject of "why our tastes are always so different" - - - That's a good thing it's what keeps us human and sane.

 sorry if I infuriate you

Well, for one thing, when good ole  Tom Cruise is using his super duper computer, he looks like he's practicing his Ti-Bo or trying out for a place in the Brittney Spears dance troop.
or....
The whole "psychic" twin thing is just rediculous...hmmmmm let's seeee.... when they report a future murder they have to lathe and chisel  balls of wood that's sent through twirly tubes with the victom and the perp nicley tapped into them.
oh yeah......and the Cop-Jet-Packs (what the hell???)

oh my, I'm getting nausious

oh yeah, and that "surprise" (predictable) ending. need I say more?

Yea, I found Minority Report to be quite dissappointing. Glad I waited till video. Actually, now that I think about it,  I would rather of not seen it at all.

OMG..... A.I. was horrible and terrible in one. Anyways, I have fought over Monority Report and own the movie, but I dont want to do it again!!!

I dont see whats wrong with balls??? Sure they could type it on the computer screen, but come on, it adds some fun cinema, to each their own, I dont think that is a detriment though.

What is wrong with psychic twins? Its no worse than the Village of the Damned. The twins are barely in the movie too, just like the balls.

Plus, hey the whole idea was to get you to think, and I think it did that.

Hey Dr. Its all good, we have different opinions. Even though yours anger me sometimes, Im not gonna kill you or smear your name. Boards are just about idea exchange.

I thought it was a great film but a gutless one.  If the movie had ended with a montage of all the murders that started occurring again after the precog system was dismantled, I would have respected the film a hundred times more.

Basically, I could potentially respect the view Spielberg took of the situation--i.e., that the costs of the system outweighed the benefits.  I wouldn't agree, but I could understand that well meaning people could hold an opposing view.

However, Spielberg refused to deal with the ramifications of his position.   Once the system was gone, people--presumably thousands of them per year, based on the film's set up--would again start getting murdered.  That's the cost of his position, but he didn't have the balls to acknowledge it.

As well, he really stacked the deck by making the punishment for the non-committed murders so horrible.  In a society that abandoned violence enough to arm cops with "sick sticks", people who would have killed in the heat of the moment, as in the opening scene, would certainly just get conseling rather than being put into a cybernetic coma.   The brain tampering thing was just a cheap mechanism to get the audience against the whole program.

WHOA-WHOA-WHOA-WHOA-WHOA!

You're saying, with all honesty that Jaws, Jurassic Park, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, SCHINDLER'S LIST, Empire of the Sun, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and Raiders of the Lost Ark sucked but A.I. was his only GOOD FILM?

WTF KFC BBQ???

At least two on the list above are considered by many to be among the best movies of all time and certainly among the best of the past 30 years.

I'm sorry, fella but you've just forfieted your right to express an opinion about this. I'm being perfectly serious. You're out of your cotton-picking mind if you think that Spielberg's only good movie was that stinkbomb A.I., which I'll remind you was only directed by him because Kubrick died. A.I. sucked.

I will agree though. Minority Report was awful. But only because the crap ending ruined it from being a good movie.

Personally, I found the ending too explicit. Did we really need to know that the precogs lived a new life somewhere or that Cruise and his ex-wife would end up together again? This said, I think it is a really good movie. I found it very entertainning and thoughtful. It might be that Philip K. Dick is one of my favourite writers.

I think it would have been better had it went for the simply action, shoot them up department with some unique characters, with the main premise of seeing crimes before they are committed as a back drop. Without getting to into the psychics and the who done-it type ending. They were trying to give us the human aspect of the subject and it didn't work this time.

My opinion of spielburg is well noted. I'll say this, he knows how to put a film together he just doesn't know how to put anything into them.

I've often said something much the same -- Spielberg tells a story well, but chooses poorly the stories he chooses to tell.

I think if I stop thinking of spielberg as a director and more as a business man I wouldn't get quite as upset. I never expect business men to want to do anything accept make a buck. I should look at his films as products, extended advertisements for themselves. That still doesn't make me want to watch them or give him more money, my money.

Just think of him as an entertainer.     Like a lot of pop music these days, it's not good as music in it's own right, but it seems as the the whole entertainment package around the performer is more important that the actual music

Spielberg just tries to make movies that will entertain people for a few hours
