Title: Peter! Jackson! King! Kong!
Post by: Squishy on April 01, 2003, 04:18:28 AM
(Oy, my heart popped.)

"It was announced today that Peter Jackson, currently producing and directing the Lord of the Rings triology, will realize his life long dream of making King Kong. Jackson had originally wanted to do the film before the LOTR films but due to the usual Hollywood headaches and red tape, tackled the Tolkien project first.

King Kong will be based on the original RKO script from 1933. The film's production will start soon after Jackson is done withe Return of the King, the last film in the LOTR series. King Kong will see a world wide release in 2005."

King Kong needs but one thing to put it over the top.

Father McGruder.

Hey, that's great news for Jackson.  He's finally able to fulfill his dream.  Hopefully the studio execs will be smart enough to let him do it his way.  Personally, I'd love to see Jackson tackle Godzilla, and actually do a GOOD job at it.  And yes, Kev, tossing Father McGruder in there would be a great idea.

Meanwhile you can always read the script at http://www.movie-page.com

BTW Dolph, your last movies sucked big time. Do yourself a favour and say "No" to any movie directed by Anthony Hickox. Please.

I dunno.  Didn't  Mighty Kong  (http://www.jabootu.com/mightykong.htm) and King Kong Escapes say all that needs to be said about the character?  Do we really need another giant ape movie after the zenith that is  Mighty Peking Man  (//www.stomptokyo.com/badmoviereport/mightypeking.html)?  And how could any modern FX hope to be as special as the fifty foot robot in the Dino De Laurentiis master...

masterpie...

I can't say it.

Foolishness aside, I am looking forward to Peter Jackson's version.  Just because it'll have dinosaurs in it.

HUmmm....will Jackson do the film, as he's useing the original 33 script, as a 30's period piece? I'd kinda like to see that....

"King Kong will be based on the original RKO script from 1933" <<< Ahhhh, so this means he'll do what he didi with LOTR - take the origional story and change it up a bit. Maybe Kong will fall in love with Leonardo DeCapitate   or somethiing

Wow, If I were directing King Kong I would definitely sign Verne Troyer (Mini-Me to those of you uncultured folks) and Gary Coleman to play the leads. Save me money on production costs, I would only have to use a chimpanzee, or if worse comes to worse an ORANGUTAN (the real king of all apes).

Another serious matter, when he makes the film, I hope to God he casts Britney Spears as the female lead. Before you protest, remember
A) Although I have not seen it, and it isnt my type of movie, Crossroads got decent ratings from the critics.
B) She is undeniably hot
C) she is very experienced with wildlife.
Im being Serious.

Lastly is it just me or does Peter Jackson look like "the nice, quiet kid in the back of the room who watches child porn?"

I heard he had already done some scenes back in 99 for the King Kong film I'm sure they are just following up on it since now he is making them some big dollars "You no get paied, you no get the big dollars!" :))

I just hope Jackson gets it right and does it in the fabulous stopmotion/dinamation with motion bler blend we saw in "DragonSlayer" from the 80s. I think this method is way more attractive than the cheap ruddy stuff CG is still producing. I'll say one thing though, the one fight scene at the beginning of LOFTR the fellowship againts the hords and Lord Saron were so awsome I think he would be able to pull it off but with shots like Yoda in Episode 2 I really hope the FX take an enormous leap between here and King Kong vs. Godzilla.

Keep on truckin,

I read on Fango's site that he plans to do the giant bugs scene that was cut from the original.  I've never heard anything about the bugs before.  What about the bugs?  Will Randy Quaid exterminate them?

It's actually a spider at the bottom of the canyon where Kong sends men hurling to their death from shaking a log. The spider eats some of the men. I've seen it...the scene WAS made but cut from the origional release

You said you've seen it.  Is there a copy with this scene intact, or is it floating around the web somewhere.  Yes, I know.  Pun intended.

Yes, and maybe if we're lucky while they're using a live ape, she'll be mauled to death, and the ape given a medal of duty as the next closest relative to humans.

*EVERYONE* should say "No" to any movie directed by Anthony Hickox. The guy has never made a single good movie. How he keeps getting work is beyond me. Full Eclipse is the best thing he's done and even that wasn't that great.

I just hope Jackson has the sense to hire Rick Baker to create kong no matter what method is used. Nobody does better apes than Baker.

I recall reading here that the giant "rock-tick" thing, seen chasing the little runt in the cavern in "The Black Scorpion" was one of those bugs from the original "Kong"s deleted scene.

Also out there is an online copy of Jackson's 1996 script for "Kong." (http://tbhl.theonering.net/films/king_kong_script.html) (There's also a downloadable text version, but you're have to find it yourself.)  It may not be the one he uses in the end, but it certainly has some changes! Quite a few elements resemble the deLaurentiis version. In fact, I'd say it's a very good chance this script WON'T be the one used, because there's a lot of unworkable stuff in it. But it's a fun read. Here's a couple spoils:

WARNING! SPOILERS!

(1) Ann becomes Kong's willing hostage in New York. She's as obsessed with Kong as Kong is with her. She even spurns Jack's attempt to rescue her.
(2) Jack is a fighter pilot during the Great War, experiencing a horrific dogfight in the prologue. (This foreshadows, of course, what he does in the climax, and it isn't climbing stairs. You won't believe what happens.)
(3) Denham doesn't say the line at the end because he's deader'n hell Grodin-style. But it does get said.
(4) The "lullabye" bit from "Mighty Joe Young" is ripped off.

Oh, and Theater Hopper (http://www.theaterhopper.com/04022003.shtml) does it again. The look in Jackson's eyes in the close-up is hilarious.

...in retrospect, and in light of the "holiday" that just passed, I should've named this thread "Peter Jackson's Return of the Kong."
Title: First Draft of "Kong" (mild SPOILERS)
Post by: Cullen on April 02, 2003, 10:53:18 AM
I was staggeringly unimpressed by it, almost beyond belief.  Sucked the wind right out of my sails.  In fact, seeing the words "First Draft" was the only consolation I got.

For anyone who cares, here are my problems:

* What we have here is the umptineth hero/heroine-don't-like-each-other-at-first-but-fall-in-love-in-the-end.  Granted, it goes in line with the original a little, but the original dropped it by the time the reached the island.  This we have to suffer the entire script to get through.

*Action Ann was to be expected, but Denham the ass was horribly, horribly wrong.  It's so unnecessary, it makes me want to cry.  (Denham was one of my favorite characters in the original - to see him so misused...)

*The whole script is too damn busy.  From fight with the soldiers to the crocodiles to the island itself.  Gah.

*Look, if Ann wants to be with the ape, let her.  It's just that simple.

I could get really bitter about the script, toss a hissy fit (more than I already have), except the whole thing seems so very wrong to me.  So very Hollywood, say.  I believe Jackson has no intention of using any part of this script, that this was written for the express purpose of being green lit (as I recall, this was pre Rings )  A lot of the script seemed tounge in cheek to me.  (For instance, the PG-13 line when Kong first appears.)

Now, assuming the script was made,  how much y' wanna bet that the Old Woman at the end would be played by Fay Wray?

I just hope PJ improves his style in directing & staging the action scenes.

For god sakes man, tie the friggin camera down & pull it back 30 feet.  We don't want (or need) extreme close ups & overly excessive camera moves.

For me the biggest dissapointment in LOTR was the extremely lazy direction during the action sequences. Any hack can shake the camera to heighten the excitment. Well staged action is the key me thinks.

LOOK HERE ! Peter Jackson's style is the free floater camera shot and the extreme close up so don't freggin post about it being wrong because they are his distinguishing shots.
