Title: Do your friends also like trashy movies?
Post by: The Burgomaster on May 22, 2003, 01:52:02 PM
Do your friends also like to watch trashy movies, or do they say to you, "Why do you watch that junk?"

My wife can't understand the pleasure I get out of staying up half the night on a Saturday watching three or four movies in a row like:

* GIRL GANG
* BRIDE OF THE MONSTER
* TEENAGE STRANGLER
* FRANKENSTEIN'S CASTLE OF FREAKS

Before I was married, my friends would watch these movies with me occasionally and have a few laughs. But they really weren't as interested in bad cinema as I was.

So, are you in this alone, or do you hang around with other people who would rather watch BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS instead of reading the works of Shakespeare?

I don't know about watching the "Beast of Yucca flats" that sounds boring. (By trashy you mean entertaings but the movie was made on a shoestring budget). Usauly (definetly misspelled) when my best friends comes over, we'll watch a horror movie. I showed him Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 and he loves them. He also likes Zombie (AKA Zombi 2).

My two best friends share very similar tastes, whereas my wife does not.  Nonetheless, she'll watch some of it with me (and I can vege out with the Lifetime Movies on Sunday, no problem).  Othertimes I'm alone.  Our kid is showing potential in the b-movie thing, though.

My friend is always saying that horror sucks because it´s too ugly and nasty.

"Do your friends also like to watch trashy movies...?"

Yes.  Because *sniff* you are ALL my frieeeeends!

OK, seriously:

I may be lucky this way.  I've friends who love trashy movies, but, as with any other entertainment or pastime preference, that interest is motivated by various reasons.

Some of my friends are older and remember seeing these things when they were young.  Now they see them again and feel a certain sense of guilty pleasure for liking them now, or they are interested in what disturbed them so much back when.

Some of this is based on local preference.  As I've already mentioned within this forum, my wife was the one who turned me onto Peter Jackson's earlier movies, and at first most of her interest was derived from a sense of Kiwi kinship.

But I think most of this is based on attitude.  Each of us tends to make friends with people with similar traits.  Consequently, a lot of my friends from work are quick-on-the-draw wiseacres.  Bad movie parties give us something to do together.

Oh, and as for "So, are you in this alone, or do you hang around with other people who would rather watch BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS instead of reading the works of Shakespeare?"  The answer is obvious.  No entertainment consumer should be reading that stuff because they weren't meant to be read: they were meant to be performed.  Even if by Tor.

I have a friend who used to hate horror movies,but now he loves them!

And my other friend is more of an action-thriller kind of guy,thought he loved American Beauty.

Lastly,he has been praising City By The Sea and The Recruit.

Most of my friends don't like the movies I do.  There are some exceptions, they enjoy the funny stuff (like Dead/Alive).  But most of the time when i want to watch a movie they say "oh god it's a deena movie"

My best friend is definitely into b-movies, although he can't stand some of my favorites (Chuck Norris, JCVD, Dolph, Seagal, Gary Daniels, etc.), which is understandable because not many people can.  He's more into the Evil Deads and Dead Alive/Bad Taste movies, which I am too, to a certain degree.  But I'm more into action/kung fu movies.  My other best pal can't stand when we watch intentionally crappy movies, and doesn't see the point in them, although he did enjoy Bad Taste, which is strange.  He also has an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek, but we won't go there..

I remember freaking out when I found a copy of Gymkata in a video store.  I was cracking up because the cover was so awful, yet the movie is great, albeit in an awful way too.  Anyways, my girlfriend was with me at the time, and she laughed at the fact that I was buying such an obviously crappy (but great, IMO) movie.  She couldn't understand why I wanted it, but she accepted it.  She didn't make any condescending comments, or roll her eyes.  Hell, she sat through Cool As Ice with us and was cracking up right along with us.  I'm gonna convert her someday, I swear.. but it's cool that she doesn't see anything wrong with me loving b-movies.  It's not so cool that she's into crappy romantic comedies and love stories, but hey, it's her thing, and I accept it all the same.

From your guys' stories, there are a lot of people out there that love watching crappy movies.  It's simply a matter of them admitting it or not.  I think everyone has a soft spot for crap, they just haven't come to terms with it.. yet.

I've managed to win over most of my friends, though only a few are as rabid as I am. I do have one friend-- the "straightman" of the group, so to speak-- who can appreciate b-movies, but tends toward more traditional definitions of "good" and "bad"; we love to torment him by putting on stuff like "Meet the Feebles" and "Terror Firmer." (So far, the closest we've come to actually making him throw up was "Bad Taste").

I can usually get them to enjoy the more hilarious parts, but they usually can't sit through an entire film.

Oh yeah.  Hell, if my friends didn't all like the same movies I do, cinemasodomy.com wouldn't have a readership!

My friends do indeed share my love of bad Movies.  We're from the generation that grew up watching them on our various local Late Night Bad Movie Host Shows in the 70's and early 80's so we not only spend endless hours watching Bad Movies but also spend time debating which Bad Movie Hosts from aroudn the country were our favorites.
Twice a year we get together for marathons of bad movies. My wife and I play host and we all get tons of takeout food and booze and spend about 11 or 12 hours straight watching the worst movies we can get.

Feathertop, you're a very lucky guy.  A lot of us have wives/girlfriends that either think we're crazy for watching intentionally crappy movies, or simply hate them and refuse to watch them.  A few of us have significant others that will at least tolerate them, and even watch on occasion.  But to have a wife that sits down and watches them for 11 OR 12 STRAIGHT HOURS is amazing.  I couldn't imagine my girlfriend coming up to me and asking to watch a Dolph marathon with me.  I'd cry tears of joy if that happened.

Thanks for the kind words! My wife and I hit it off from the very beginning when we met at a party that was unbelievably out of control with almost everybody under the influence of various substances. I ventured the opinion that the party was like BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS only not as coherent and she actually knew what I was talking about!  Part of the evening was even spent trying to stump each other on weird songs from Bad Movies.  Again, though, she's from my generation and I think all of us having been exposed to Bad Movies early on via Bill Cardille, Svenghoulie, Texas 27 Film Vault, etc pretty much hooked us on them for life!

You need to enjoy the Evil Dead Trilogy in order to be my friend. It's written in some contract somewhere.

I change stations every few years (2-4) and have become very good at recruiting new groups that also enjoy watching b-movies.  Cut their teeth on some easy ones, like "Flash Gordon" (1980), "Evil Dead 2", and "Bad Taste."  Using MST3K works too.  Then you start moving into the serious territory.  Eventually, even though they know you are going to watch something awful at least once per gathering, they still come over for the laughs and breaks between movies (food, talking, etc.).

i used to have a weekly "Bad Movie Night" with my best friends.  for a year every week we watched at least 2 bad movies.  some weeks it was 8 or 10, but we had a great time.

then i moved to Vegas where nobody likes bad movies.  so i think it's back to Dallas for meeeeeeee...

i wish there were a way to find people in a specific place that liked bad movies.
anyone know of such a site?

Hey, there's gotta be some people-- Isn't Vegas the current home of Ray Dennis Steckler (director of The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies) and his video store?

I'm not very good at converting people, mainly because I use to enjoy the strangest things - Jean Claude Van Damme later films, asian stuff - and they don't use to find them funny at all. However, I managed to introduce my sister to asian stuff and now loves it, and even better, I convinced some college people to watch "Dagon" and some John Carpenter stuff, like "Escape from L.A." or "In the mouth of madness", with great success.

My closer friends still look at me with fear when I tell them I got a new DVD that they might enjoy, but at least I manage to make them watch different things than usual now and then. My last victory was to subject my best friend, who often refuses to watch movies with any intelectual content at all (he often says he only wants fun) to the first half of "Apocalypse Now Redux". He is still hallucinating.

I don't recomend FRANKENSTIENS CASTLE OF FREAKS. It's a bad/stupid movie of the worst kind.
