Title: Best Decade of Filmaking ?
Post by: Scott on May 28, 2003, 01:05:43 PM
Out of all the decades of filmaking which is your favorite? My is the 60's first then the 70's. In this order I suppose:

1) 60's - Style of all genres, breaking away from the studios.
2) 70's - Continuation of 60's style and better stories
3) 50's - Sci-Fi
4) 80's - Adventure Films
5) 40's - Classics
6) 20's - Why not the Silent groundbreaking stuff
7) 30's -  Some good stuff
8) 90's - Losing Touch
10) 2000 + - Almost Gone

the 80s on top of an explosion of adventure films also had an explosion of 80's comedys and horror movies, along with 'sexy' comedies. thats why I like the 80s the most.

As far as bad movies, probably the 80s.

Movies in general, I'd say the 70s.

Well...

Pre-Great Train Robery... all slient films try to imitate stage preformance, not knowing that film could go beyond the stage.

After the Great Train Robery, movie actions were more important then anything else... well they were slient films (this is very import to see why many slient films seems to top noch and years apart from the Talkies.

1930's to late 1930's... Talk-talk-talk-talk (most stories were noting more then dramas)

Late 1930's to early 1950's... Sing, and dance...

Mid 1950's to early 1960's... Cold War Propraganda... Them!, The Thing... Classic SF stories but they are really Cold War Propaganda...

1960's to mid 1960's... Psycho years... and stories that tried to copy the horror

Mid 1960's to late 1960's... Intense moves require a new rating system... X, R and PG movies were born..

Early 1970's to Mid 1970's... (pre-Jaws) Expermenting with X ratings...

Jaws... (1975 and up) Summer hits... Sure, but its very true...

Star Wars (1977 and up) SF explosion (this is why Moonraker and Alien was made)

Halloween (1978 and up) The slasher movie and holiday killer movie types.

late 1970's to early early 1980's... The Adventure years (Slightly spin off type from Star Wars [hero's try to save the day and rescue a princess or capture great treasure] kind of mock by Indiana Jones, but I've seen several movies that pre-dates Indiana Jones... )

Early 1980's to late 1980's... SNL years... Almost everybody from SNL of the 1970's were in a major movie... and also changed alot of movies doing so... Example... Movies like "Lethal Weapon" and "Die Hard" wouldnt get off the ground if "48 hours" didnt become a big hit.

Mid 1990's and up... Lets make fun of the horror slasher films while being scary... (also make a plot and motive on a fly)

Mid 60s to mid 70s-- The period after the Hayes Code was abolished (making it so that films could do whatever they want), and before the blockbuster phenomenon set in (when the studios decided to put a stranglehold on everything).

Definitely the 80s, by far.  You have Golan-Globus domination, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Sho Kosugi and the ninja craze, Gymkata, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.. need I really say more?  I look back at the 80s and I tell myself that I would've crapped if a movie like Pray for Death got released into the theatres regularly.  I just wish things were still like that..

To me, it was definately the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Sure it's three decades, but those were the years the produced the best in both mainstream and independent cinema.

I'm a HUGE Silent Movie fan so I'd have put the 20's in 3rd place.

My FAVORITE decade of filmmaking is the 1970s. It may not be the best, but about 70% of my all-time favorite movies are from the 70s. Look at this list of everything from Oscar winners to drive-in classics:

* GODFATHER
* GODFATHER II
* TAXI DRIVER
* SERPICO
* DIRTY HARRY
* THE EXORCIST
* DOG DAY AFTERNOON
* JAWS
* STAR WARS
* MEAN STREETS
* DELIVERANCE
* A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
* THE STING
* DAWN OF THE DEAD
* THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
* THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I also admire the 1960s, which produced movies like:

* EASY RIDER
* PSYCHO
* THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
* 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
* PLANET OF THE APES
* WOODSTOCK
* BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

And many, many more.

I think the worst decade was probably the 1980s, with the 90s coming in at 2nd worst, and the current decade trying its best to out-do the 80s and 90s for incredible badness. MTV and CG effects have ruined (and continue to ruin) the film industry.
