Title: BRUCE ALMIGHTY has managed to offend some. Want to guess why some are offended?
Post by: Chris K. on May 30, 2003, 03:48:59 PM
Well, I was listening to the radio this morning and it seems that some are quite upset with BRUCE ALMIGHTY. And why are they upset? They claim the film is insulting religion in general and that the movie should be banned. And I thought it was because it was Morgan Freeman playing God (To which I am suprised that some religious groups out there are not making a big deal out of it as it shows God being black. Not that I really care mind you, but apparently some out there do.).

Yet I have to say these people who get so uptight need to relax and understand that it's just a movie. I haven't seen it yet and I know some out there who liked it, regardless any religious implications used as a bit of humor as long as it's not "way out there".

Now this is only a small group of upset people out there, but has anybody here seen BRUCE ALMIGHTY and if so is it really "sacreligious" more than, oh let's say THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST? And if not, do you all still think that religion can be used as a comical ideal to get a point across, in which from what I hear that's what BRUCE ALMIGHTY did?

And if it all gets worse, I guess I'll have to say goodbye to my Jesus-action film.

oh come ON!
i am a Christian and i think Bruce Almighty is a comedy movie and that's that.
since when was using our imaginations limited to nonreligious topics?
don't folk think God has a sense of humor?
i think He does.
and as long as the movie isn't outright blasphemous, i haven't a problem with it.

this must be why i keep getting kicked out of churches.  i can't stand uptight Christians.

Actually, to tell you the truth, I dont remember hearing any religious references made at all. Bruce only uses prayer beads to pray to God. Maybe they are upset at such a pagan ritual?????

In that case, lets get rid of Christmas trees, lights, wreaths, and yule logs, all pagan.

let's hope any of these goofy offended people don't accidentally see JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER...http://us.imdb.com/Title?0311361...or their heads might explode...

...you realize that God IS religious, right?

People need to step back and go "I mean, c'mon."

You do realise that those raving loonies hate Catholicism, right?  I believe the rosary is largely a Catholic thing (haven't heard of it in any other religions so....)

I hope everyone realizes that these "groups" that are coming out against movies are usually one of two entities; either their some phony-baloney televangelist-style hypocrites, trying to cash in on something popular by warning their sheep, I mean congregation about the latest Hollywood sacrelige, or they're marketing people for the movie studio, or record label in the case of speaking out against "The Devil's music". Or both. Either way, someone cashes in.

I saw Bruce Almighty and actually there are some interesting references. The golden sheep at his party (damn funny!) and the party of the Tomatoe soup (red sea) are just a few. But seriously, this film is no more controversial in reality than a 30 year old's piddled blanket. Religious tradionals have become so uptight about banning and attacking everything that makes Gods inmage into satire or just  makes something out of it they think is wrong or jading. There is huge front for their kids too which will just make more of the same types of people and by the time I pass on, find out all the answers, they will be fighting against Bruce Almighty 35: Carrey created the Apocalypse because it takes to humor something they think should be a concrete prespective inside a little orange box they can open and proclaim it the uber-prism-container-of-salvation-zealotry.

I hate these quandries that come up with every damn religious movie this side of Lair of the White Worm.

What I think is funny is that Morgan Freeman is slowly gaining more power as he goes along.  I mean, he was the president of the United States in that DEEP IMPACT movie.  Now he's playing God.  Where does one go from there?

On the other hand, Catholics in my home town did manage to get DOGMA pulled from the theaters after one day.  Well, they were probably assisted by other Christian folks.  I don't think DOGMA is worth that kind of attention.  It was funny, but not really deserving all that much attention.

Oh well, protesting a movie just makes the receipts go up.  Maybe this is just a studio planted story.

Definitely a publicity grab, either for the religious group or the movie. Either way, I'm sure it's exactly what the studio expected, and wanted - free advertising.

I haven't seen Bruce Almighty myself (looks dumb), but I've got nothing against it.

As a Christian myself, I get annoyed with some of the bible-thumping born-again types who are often responsible for this kind of thing. To this bunch, you don't even qualify as a Christian if you belong to one of the mainline churches. What nerve. Problem is, in some people's eyes, all Christians get lumped together.

I can appreciate the need to treat certain subjects with proper respect, but to make them untouchable isn't right. Personally, I grew up with the comedy of Dave Allen, and Bill Cosby's Noah routine, and the Oh God! movies, and I don't think it's hurt me one bit.

There is even a program of bible study based around the religious-themed episodes of the Simpsons. My wife, a minister, has used this.

Again, I haven't seen Bruce Almighty, but if the message is that being God is no easy job, that's fine with me.

Bruce Almighty might not be the best example, but in my own view, if people are making movies about God, with characters praying, and some of the humour rooted in scripture, this should be a very good thing for Christians, and should be encouraged. It's certainly more accessible than an epic in Aramaic.

I'll tell you what they were offended at

1.)The walking on water being made fun of
2.) Parting of the Soup
3.) Jim Carrey saying he hated god ( religios people hate anything that may change a persons thinking about GOD)

There are probably countless other things lemon heads think about but I personnally nearly fell off my seat watching. As I watched I was thinking about what parts people thought were hard to watch and came up with these scenes.

I still cannot get over the fact that Bruce (who is basically God at the time) had a golden calf at his party... Dear Lord that was the funniest thing about the movie.

My own experience would say that the first two, or really any joke that would require at least a basic understanding of scripture, would be a big hit with many churchgoers and clergy (some of the best religious jokes come from ministers). Can't speak for the nutjobs, of course.

The third point, of course, is central to the plot, and obviously the reason Bruce needs to be taught a lesson. Most, I think, would get that point. I'm a little concerned about the idea of lumping "religious people" together in one category. We are talking about an extreme minority here. A good many Christian churches are very much about changing the way people think about God. For that matter, anything that encourages people to think about God at all would be considered a good thing by many.

Let's watch the generalizations, and the knee-jerk reactions.
