Title: Favorite villain from the old BATMAN television series?
Post by: The Burgomaster on June 04, 2003, 04:58:09 PM
The only rule here is that you cannot choose any of the following (because they are too obvious):

JOKER
PENGUIN
RIDDLER
CAT WOMAN

All others are fair game.

I'd have to say that mine are:

EGG HEAD
LOUIE THE LILAC
THE MAD HATTER
KING TUT

I'd have to say Egghead. You gotta love Vincent Price.

I liked Egghead as well.  I also liked King Tut. I do have to add another villian to the list. You can't forget False Face....by the way who played him?

I think mine would either be Egghead (always loved Vincent Price) or Mr. Freeze.

Man, how I hated this series! It didn't escape my infant mind that the show was crap, and that anything on it made sense at all. I always got on my nerves when I saw the villains putting chubby Batman and moronic Robin in the silliest situations ever to get them killed, and then leaving just to allow them to escape, instead of just killing them at first sight.

Uff, anyway my vote is for The Riddler. His green pajama was cool, and he was the only character in the show who looked more intelligent than the masked couple. Of course that that wasn't that difficult...

Many people ridicule this series now, but when it was on in the 60s it was considered to be a really "cool" show, and many actors wanted to be guest stars. It was campy and ridiculous on purpose . . . that was no accident. Look at this list of guest stars and tell me of another series that can top it:

CESAR ROMERO
BURGESS MEREDITH
HARVEY LEMBECK
FRANK GORSHIN
ELI WALLACH
SHELLEY WINTERS
IDA LUPINO
CLIFF ROBERSTON (as Shame!)
ZSA ZSA GABOR
OTTO PREMINGER
CAROLYN JONES
VINCENT PRICE
MICHAEL RENNIE
VAN JOHNSON
MAURICE EVANS
TALLULAH BANKHEAD
RUDY VALLEE
WALTER SLEZAK
EARTHA KITT
JULIE NEWMAR
MICHAEL PATAKI
RICHARD BAKALYAN
JERRY MATHERS (the Beaver!)
ELLEN CORBY
JOAN COLLINS
JOHN ASTIN (played the Riddler in twp episodes!)
VICTOR BUONO
JOE BESSER (a stooge!)
GYPSY ROSE LEE
LEE MERIWETHER
ROB REINER
GEORGE SANDERS
JAMES BROLIN
BUCK KARTALIAN
STEVE ALLEN
JOE FLYNN
ALAN HALE
PHYLLIS DILLER
BILLY CURTIS
LESLEY GORE
DOODLES WEAVER
MILTON BERLE
RODDY MCDOWALL (as the Bookworm!)
ART CARNEY
VICTOR FRENCH
LIBERACE
DAVID WAYNE
JILL ST. JOHN
TERI GARR
ANNE BAXTER

And this is only a partial list!

Batman is a great show, I havent seen it in many years to really recall any of the other suspects... but I do remember it was fun to watch when I was a kid (as well as the Stooges)

And speaking of Stooges... I do think (sorry this is my theory on why many talanted actors seems to play many cameo's in the 60's like Batman and Twightlight Zone)

The Three Stooges were dead before the late 1950's... nobody cared anymore about them or their type of act "Vaudeville". Then a few years later 1958 (I think), TV came into view, and the problem was empty slots... and it seems that the Stooges shorts could fit those slots... and guess what... Kids end up loving them... Then Hollywood made the Stooges offers (I like to call "Pay back movies" durring the 60's)

Anyway, I like to think that many actors came to realized how powerful a tool TV is, And tried to make apparences as much as possable. Also, remember back in the 1960's and earlier, Hollywood was kind of funny... If your hot they would try to milk you as much as possible... and when your not, you will get tossed aside.

I got my Mom to make a Baked ALaska a few years ago.  I'd been obsessed with them since the riddler put a bomb in the baked alaska in one episode.  She really screwed it up!!! hahah.  it was like a volcano!!  She got it right the next time thought.

Which is why everyone from Batman and Robin to the Harlem Globetrotters to Sandy Duncan did appearances on "Scooby Doo"...I guess...

Since The Big Four are off-limits, I would vote for Art Carney (I think?)as The Archer.

Dang, I feel old.  I didn't realize she was around in the 60s

You may remember she was also on that episode of the original Star Trek series in the 60's where she played a sidekick to Robert Lansing as an alien agent. It was really just a pilot for a series to star Lansing and Garr but the episode apparently didn't inspire enough interest to launch a series.
