Title: Old Hulk TV Series...
Post by: Great Sage on June 04, 2003, 05:15:35 PM
Awaiting the arrival of the NEW “Hulk” movie, I can’t help but get nostalgic about the old television series.  I must admit, that show as funny as it looks today, was my favorite â€" followed by the “Dukes of Hazard.”

There were some rather peculiar events each week on the Hulk series.

1) Banner is always conveniently thrown into a dumpster, closet or secluded space in which he transforms into the Hulk

2) The guy lived his life out of a little duffle bag he carried around.

3) Flanels, flanels and flanels!  Banner had a flanel for each episode...  Eventually, I had to buy one.

4) For a guy who was continually beat up, Banner always remained collected.

It’s loads of fun these days... I only wish they would’ve made a Hulk vs. Six Million Dollar Man episode.

Can't forget that for someone trying to hide his identity, Banner sure picked a lot of aliases that sounded similar to his real name: David Baxter, David Bentley, David Brinkley....

Going back another ten years, I also get a kick out of the original Hulk cartoon and its classic theme song: "an ever-lovin' Hulk! Hulk! Hulk!"  Made Rocket Robin Hood look good by comparison.

You and me both.  "Don't make me angry Mr. Austin, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

I always wanted Jack McGee to find out that Banner was alive and that he was the Hulk, then have a change of heart about exposing him.

Did you ever notice that Lou Ferrigno sometimes wore these green shoe-things with a strap on them? I remember a few scenes of him running down a road or something in a long or medium shot and you could see these green shoes on his feet (they looked soft, like suede or something). I guess it was to protect Ferrigno's feet, but it really destroyed the illusion when you saw the Hulk barefoot one second, and then the camera cut away to a long shot and he suddenly had green shoes on. I guess they were hoping that viewers would not notice . . . but I did.

I was particularly fond of the Hulk movie with Thor in it. The confrontation between Thor and McGee was priceless with an annoyed Thor answering the door in a towel with a pitcher of beer (being used as a glass) in hand.

Stuff like that doesn't bother me, doesn't ruin the illusion.   Something comparable would be switching back and forth between an external shot of a car going down the highway and an internal shot of actors in a car with a movie project road behind them.  Yeah it looks silly and yeah you know "one's fake and the other's real", but when I enter into the story and illusion of watching a movie or something, I'm willing to grant a lot of license that some things just aren't practical and if the story works or the characters are engaging or whatever, then I can forgive a lot of production issues.

Title: The Show Needed SuperVillains
Post by: Feathertop on June 05, 2003, 08:21:22 PM
I rarely watched the show since I was always hoping for villains of the caliber of The Leader, The Abomination, The Devastator, The Glob, The Missing Link, etc from the comic books. I know a TV budget is limited, but c'mon! The only episode I ever saw that came CLOSE to having a super-villain was when some other guy became another Gamma-Ray monster.(And even THEN I wondered why not just call the character The Abomination and try to hook some of the Hulk comic book crowd?)
But how about Jeremy "The Best Damn Sherlock Holmes EVER" Brett's appearance on one show?

Personally, I feel the best episode was the takeoff on "The Most Dangerous Game", when Banner was being hunted on the island, and the first half of the episode was about Banner trying to escape a locked room within a time limit. I still get the chills thinking that Banner almost didn't find the key in the chess rule book before the countdown stopped!

Anyone else remember this one?

Good call, Neon. The plot might be old as the movies, but it was fun to see it again.
