Title: LAST HOUSE ON...vs...I SPIT ON YOUR...
Post by: mr. henry on June 10, 2003, 12:05:38 AM
i finally got around to seeing I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE. obviously it's VERY similar to the earlier LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT by wes craven. i'm just wondering which you guys (and gals) think hits harder...

i think that, even despite the goofy cop humor placed in LAST HOUSE...and the goofy misplaced music, LAST HOUSE was more effective. the bad guys were just creepier and, while the raping was longer in I SPIT..., that didn't necessarily make it more disgusting or repulsive...just sorta redundant. plus in LAST HOUSE, the victims actually died, which of course is more extreme...

I dig both the movies, and I think the effectiveness depends on the disposition of the viewer.  My good buddy Brother Fistula says Last House is better, I say I Spit is.  The thing that nearly pushes Last House to the front for me is the closeup on David's face during the money shot where he drools on Mary.  That is truly disgusting.  But I Spit shows it as bad as it gets, and sometimes it needs to be shown like that.  People need to be aware that that kind of s**t happens.  It's touched my life a lot closer than I'd like, and I know how bad it can get.
So, in closing, do the world a favor and brutally murder a redneck.  If you still haven't gotten my point, read my signature line.

I like both movies, but I rank LAST HOUSE higher than I SPIT. For me, LAST HOSUE is one of the "big 3" midnight/drive-in hits from that era. The "big 3" are LAST HOUSE, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and THE HILLS HAVE EYES. It was several years later that I SPIT came on the scene. I think it ranks just a shade below the others that I mentioned.

I think I will put those on my list as well. LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a film a seen parts of in my youth, but don't remember much and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE has always been floating around, but never had the chance to see it.

I saw I SPIT quite a while ago.  It seemed to inspire critical revulsion a little more than LAST HOUSE, but that may be just because it came out later.   I rewatched LAST HOUSE fairly recently--I have to agree it probably is worse due to the deaths of the victims, but it's alleviated by the music and the inappropriate humor.

I have to agree on this point. It made the whole thing seem amateurish, as if Craven couldn't really hold tension and didn't know what to do. Either that or it I had my hand at directing it, it would have been a truly unpleasent viewing experience.

I just saw "Last House.." a few days ago, actually.  It was not what I expected.  I was sorting thinking it be fairly typical haunted house fair, so I was fairly surprised by what it was.  I thought the music in juxtaposition with the subject matter was pretty strange.  Not bad, just added to the whole surreality of it all.  Between that and the cops, you had a fairly wide gap between the vicious and the silly that, if anything, made the vicious seem even more so.

even though LAST HOUSE was Craven's amatuer effort as a filmmaker i feel it still has a lot of rawness, power and a documentary feel to it. i didn't even finish I SPIT, i felt it was just a senseless, cruel and exploitive movie. the characters were paper thin and the story was just a set-up for revenge.
