Title: So...now that it's out, another Hulk thread
Post by: Brother Ragnarok on June 21, 2003, 02:01:38 AM
Ang Lee can't pace a movie to save his life.  The damn thing was nearly 2 hours 15 minutes long.  Now, I have a great attention span and I love a long talky movie if the talking is good and the movie is...well...interesting.  But isn't the point of the Hulk, um, "HULK SMASH!?!?!?"  The sparse smashing and fighting scenes that were there were pretty damn cool, but they were too short and the rest of the movie just wandered in circles.  I think it was trying to be Spider-Man and have a great emotional story etc, but it failed.  Dammit, Hulk SMASH!

I liked it a great deal.  I found no portion of the movie dull in any way, shape, or form.

In fact, I went with seven other people, ages ranging from fifty-nine to nineteen, and not a one of them thought the movie dull.  The nineteen year old thought Hulk was better than Spider-man, and, while I loved Spider-man , I think he's right.

Not completely.  Part of it also deals with a fundamentally good man dealing with a terrible monster within him.  That part was neglected, unfortunately; the only complaint I'll make about the movie is that Banner should have been more active.  Other than that, you have several elements of the comic in there (Hulk fighting other monsters; Hulk reacting poorly to people who have angered him; Hulk goes to the middle of nowhere, starts to relax, become one with Nature, only to have the damn puny humans attack him again.)

Hulk is different from other comic book movies, but a valid interpretation.

I loved it.

The point of Hulk was never "Hulk Smash"; not really, anyway.  It's always been about the Hulk trying to be left alone, and about the people around the Hulk and how he impacts their lives.  The Hulk was never a traditional "superhero."  Even when he had Banner's mind, he still mostly tried to just lead a normal life despite his "condition."

The fight scenes were excellent, in my opinion.  The were a tad brief, but I think that was to keep the emphasis on the story, and keep it from descending into a slugfest.  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had a similar set up - the fight scenes were brief compared to the dialogues and plot developement.

The only part that bugged me was the almost constant use of split screen.  I was starting to feel like I was watching an episode of 24.  "My name is Bruce Banner, and this is the worst day of my life."  I guess the idea was to give a "comic book" feel to it, with frames like a comic book, but it was just a bit overused.

Final opinion:  About as good as Daredevil or Spider Man, and much better than either X-Men movie. 8 out of 10.

I thought the movie was very good . . . up until the last 15 minutes. All that senseless drivel and stupid special effects with Nick Nolte should have been saved for the "deleted scenes" portion of the DVD. Other than that, I was very pleased with the movie.

Put me in the "didn't like" section.

Not enough action IMO. I hated the editing. They seemed to try WAY too hard to look like a comic book. The action scenes were great though. I think that the movie would have been a lot better if it was shorter.

Wow, I'm glad someone agreed with me so I don't look like a total mook.  And no matter how monster-ified you make it, a French poodle is still going to look really really gay.

I was very excited to see this movie and quite p**sed when there wasn't a midnight showing in my area.  But I'm with you Brother R, I wasn't that impressed.  The action scenes were great, but they were too brief.  I think the pace of the movie was all wrong and the last twenty minutes was more of a let down than a finish.

I don't think this movie will do very well after the opening weekend.  It just doesn't have that broad of an appeal.   The vast majority of people looking for a good arsty fartsy drama with a deep storyline would never go to a "comic book" movie.  On the opposite side of the coin, it is not a kids movie either.

I'll probably wait for video.   I'm one of the few who didn't like CROUCHING TIGER
so I doubt I'll like the Hulk either.

I didn't like Crouching Tiger either, you're not the only one.  Give me Legend of Zu or even Ninja Hunt any day.
