I thought it was a good idea to think of the best chases of the 70's, 80's, etc. One thing though, don't include races .
70's: Junkman. All those crashes and a car jumping over a plane. One word: WOW
80's: The Blues Brothers. Acutally the whole chase scene and the fiasco in the that office building. The police, the fire departmen and the National Guard, with tank. Question, did that whole chase stem from just a driving violation?
90's: Goldeneye. A tank vs. a car, you decide.
2000: Matrix Reloaded. Well, the best computer genertrated car chase. If I see something better (Bad Boys II, maybe), I'll change it .
So what's yours?

Bulls**t I still can't hear you, sound off like you got a pair.
The chase with the crane blew me away!
Especially the part when Arnold is clinging to the hook and the TX swings the crane arm and slams him into buildings to dislodge him.
Totally bad ass!
From the seventies, mine is the chase in The French Connection; they didn't have the road blocked off as for a movie set, it was real.
Gotta go with Blues Brothers as well, loved seeing the Nazis being forced into the river. I think it did start with a traffic violation.
1960s: BULLITT
1970s: THE FRENCH CONNECTION and THE SEVEN UPS
1980s: TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.
1990s: JADE
Current: RONIN
Noteworthy: William Friedkin directed 3 of the above movies. He has quite a knack for chase scenes . . .

That's my list, though I would give The Dead Pool honorable mention for a really cool Bullitt chase parody.
The Wachowski brothers who created the awesome Matrix chase scene, said that Bullitt has the best car chase scene of any ever made. And they made a damn great one
